Triangle Residents Seeing More Snakes
Months of dry weather across central North Carolina are leading to a noticeable increase in snake sightings throughout the Triangle. Experts say snakes are moving closer to homes, sidewalks, and waterways as they search for water and prey that have also migrated toward remaining moisture sources.
Wildlife officials say copperheads, rat snakes, king snakes, and water snakes are among the species residents are most likely to encounter this season. Although many people are alarmed by the uptick in sightings, reptile specialists stress that most snakes are nonvenomous and prefer to avoid humans.
The increased attention on snakes comes as Repticon returned to Raleigh for Memorial Day weekend at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds. The event features reptiles from around the world and includes educational seminars, live demonstrations, and opportunities for attendees to interact safely with the animals.
Experts continue to encourage caution outdoors, advising residents not to handle unfamiliar snakes and to stay alert in tall grass or near water. Officials also reminded the public that several snake species in North Carolina are protected by law, making it illegal to harm or relocate them without proper authorization.
Just curious…

Cary Becomes the Center of the Soccer World
The Soccer Tournament returns to WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary this week, bringing together more than 2,000 athletes from around the world for six days of competition beginning Tuesday and running through Sunday. The event has quickly become one of the country’s largest summer soccer showcases since launching in Cary in 2023.
This year’s tournament includes men’s, women’s and newly added mixed-gender divisions, all played under TST’s unique Target Score Time rules designed to create dramatic finishes without ties. Organizers say teams from 15 countries and multiple professional leagues will participate.
The field includes internationally known clubs and celebrity-backed organizations such as Wrexham AFC, Villarreal CF, Club América, Kings League All-Stars, KRÜ FC and Dreamville FC. Former U.S. women’s national team stars will also return as part of the defending women’s champions, U.S. Women.
In addition to the professional tournament, the Cary Cup youth competition will bring thousands of young players and coaches to the Triangle this weekend, further turning Cary into a major soccer destination ahead of next year’s FIFA World Cup.

Courage Hit 100 Wins With Road Victory
The North Carolina Courage added another milestone to their growing legacy Saturday afternoon with a strong road win over Racing Louisville. Behind goals from Evelyn Ijeh and Ashley Sanchez, the Courage earned the franchise’s 100th regular season NWSL victory.
Weekend Highlights:
North Carolina Courage defeated Racing Louisville, 2-1, to improve to 4W-3L-3D before the league’s midseason break. The victory also marked the Courage’s historic 100th regular season NWSL win.
Evelyn Ijeh struck first in the 13th minute, finishing a fast counterattack with a sharp left-footed shot inside the box. Manaka Matsukubo helped create the chance with an aggressive run through the Louisville defense.
Ashley Sanchez continued her hot streak with her latest goal in the 78th minute, calmly scoring after a setup from Feli Rauch, who returned from suspension and immediately made an impact with an assist.
Racing Louisville scored once in stoppage time off a corner kick, but the Courage defense held firm to secure the road victory and keep momentum rolling into next weekend’s matchup with Angel City.
Another big weekend on the field proved once again that North Carolina soccer fans always have something exciting to cheer about.

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇
A: Goose and Rock dove
The rock dove (ancestor of the domestic pigeon) and the goose share the title for the first bird domesticated by humans, depending on whether you measure by archaeological records or the timeline of poultry farming.
The Rock Dove (World's Oldest Domesticated Bird): Historically, the rock dove (Columba livia) is widely recognized as mankind's oldest feathered companion. Some genetic and historical estimates suggest their relationship with humans began up to 10,000 years ago in the Mediterranean and Mesopotamia.
