Wake County Communities Hit Pause on Data Center Growth

Map showing where data centers are allowed, where there's a moratorium and where they're being discussed in Central NC.

Wake County leaders are taking measured steps as interest in data center development grows across central North Carolina. In Apex, officials approved a one-year pause on a proposed project, while Wendell enacted a moratorium through the end of 2026 despite not having any current applications.

These decisions reflect a broader effort to better understand the implications of data centers, including their effects on infrastructure, land use, and energy demand. Local leaders are opting to slow development rather than move forward without clear guidelines.

At the county level, commissioners have started discussing how to plan for and manage potential growth tied to the industry. While no formal policies are in place, the topic is becoming a priority as demand increases.

Across the region, other communities are exploring similar actions, but Wake County stands out for taking both reactive and proactive steps as it evaluates the future of data center development.

The original name of Austin, the capital of Texas, was Waterloo. In 1839, the hamlet of Waterloo was selected as the new capital of the Republic of Texas and subsequently renamed to honor Stephen F. Austin, the "Father of Texas". The site was chosen for its scenic beauty and central location, despite initial concerns about its vulnerability.
