Duke Marches On as UNC, NC State Exit Early

March Madness has produced sharply different outcomes for the Triangle's three major programs. Duke is still alive and thriving, entering the Round of 32 as a No. 1 seed and one of the most serious contenders to win the national championship.

UNC's run ended almost as soon as it began. The Tar Heels fell to VCU in the first round after giving away a 19 point lead, turning a promising position into a season ending collapse. The loss is likely to intensify scrutiny around a program that has now endured another early NCAA tournament exit under Hubert Davis.

NC State's stay in the field was even shorter. The Wolfpack were eliminated in the First Four after a comeback attempt against Texas fell short late. That result closed the book on State's season before the main bracket truly got underway.

The result is a familiar March contrast for the area: one program still dreaming big, and two others left to wonder what went wrong. For now, Duke carries the Triangle's hopes alone.

Cary Has a Big Heart But One Rider Won Out

In this charmingly thought-provoking "just for fun" poll, readers were asked to make an impossible act of kindness — choosing which of four deserving transit riders gets the one open seat. The results weren't even close at the top, but the comments revealed just how much Cary readers agonized over the decision.

🏆 Clear Winner: Elderly woman with a cane, earning a commanding 58.59% of the vote. Readers overwhelmingly felt she was most at risk of losing her balance; a concern echoed repeatedly in the comments.

The Rest of the Field:

  • 🍼 Lady holding a baby — roughly ~20%, second place

  • 🩼 Injured man on crutches — roughly ~13%, third place

  • 🤰 Pregnant woman — roughly ~8%, fourth place

Representative Reader Comments:

"Because she is the one most likely to lose her balance…"

"The older lady is more likely to fall."

"A very tough decision. Could have had a reason for each of them!"

How Is the Gas Price Surge Hitting Cary? Readers Weigh In

From Cary Spotlight | Issue #876, March 17, 2026

In a poll that captured the full spectrum of Cary's economic reality, readers shared how rising gas prices are hitting — or not hitting — their daily lives. With only 34 votes cast, the results were surprisingly spread across the board, suggesting there's no single Cary experience when it comes to the pump.

🏆 Leading Response: "I'm worried about higher prices for everyday goods"29.41% of readers say the bigger concern isn't the gas itself, but the ripple effect on groceries and daily essentials.

The Rest of the Field:

  • I'm spending noticeably more on gas — roughly ~24%

  • 😐 No major impact yet — roughly ~26%, a surprisingly close third

  • 🚗 I've started driving less or changing habits — roughly ~15%

  • 💬 Other (please specify) — roughly ~6%

  • 💼 It's impacting my work or business costs — roughly ~3%

Representative Reader Comments:

"I have a hybrid so less impact. My mate has an electric vehicle powered with assistance from our solar panels. We definitely aren't impacted the way others are."

"Gas prices in NC were $4.60 in mid-2022 with an average of $3.95 for the year and $3.52 in 2023 without any war to blame. It is too early to make any long term predictions. Do not create panic."

It's Not the Gas — It's Everything Else

The spread of responses tells an interesting story: while nearly a third of readers are eyeing the broader cost-of-living impact, a roughly equal share say they haven't felt a major pinch at all — a reminder that EVs, hybrids, and work-from-home arrangements are quietly reshaping how Cary experiences fuel costs.

Just curious…
