Community Weighs In on Wake County’s New Emergency Call System
Wake County EMS is moving to a four tier emergency call system as daily demand reaches about 400 calls and continues to grow. The new structure replaces a largely first come, first served model with one that ranks calls by medical urgency.
Under the plan, E1 calls involving life threatening emergencies will receive the fastest response, while lower priority calls such as routine transports and illness related concerns will have longer target times or be routed through a nursing advice line. Officials say only about 10 percent of calls qualify as the highest priority.
The change has prompted questions from residents concerned about potential delays in serious but less obvious medical situations. EMS leaders say dispatchers will rely on structured questioning and default to sending help when information is unclear.
The department will also limit the use of lights and sirens to the most critical calls, citing safety concerns. The new system will roll out in phases, with additional public meetings planned.
Just curious…
Wake County EMS will begin prioritizing 911 calls by severity in April. Do you support this change?
Gift Cards and Good Cause in Cary
The Cary Police Department is partnering with The Blood Connection to hold a blood drive on Feb. 28 at its Walker Street location. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and aims to support Special Olympics North Carolina.
Donors will receive $30 in rewards that can be redeemed for an e gift card and will be offered complimentary gourmet snacks. The Blood Connection will also donate $10 per donor to the statewide nonprofit.
While walk ups are accepted, organizers encourage advance registration to help anticipate demand. Eligibility requirements include a minimum age of 16, a weight of at least 110 pounds and, for minors, written parental consent.
Participants are encouraged to hydrate, eat beforehand and bring a valid photo ID. Blood may be donated every 56 days, and rewards expire after 30 days.
Just curious…
