The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇
A: Thomas L. Jennings
Thomas L. Jennings was the first African-American to be awarded a U.S. patent, receiving it on March 3, 1821, for his pioneering dry cleaning method known as "dry scouring". As a free born New Yorker, tailor, and abolitionist, he was able to legally secure the rights to his invention, which helped him fund civil rights causes.
Key details about Thomas L. Jennings and his patent:
The Invention: "Dry scouring" was a method of removing dirt and grease from clothing without using water, laying the groundwork for modern dry cleaning.
Significance: Because 18th-century U.S. patent laws previously made it nearly impossible for enslaved people to hold patents, Jennings's status as a free man was critical in him being able to secure the intellectual property rights.
Impact: He used the income from his invention to purchase the freedom of family members still enslaved and to support the abolitionist movement.
Recognition: In 2014, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution honoring him for his achievements and contributions.
