Duke Energy: Snow in Triangle Poses Lower Outage Risk
Duke Energy is preparing for snow in North Carolina this weekend, but the utility says the Triangle region is less likely to experience major outages compared to last weekend’s ice storm. Ice accumulation can quickly cause branches to fall and damage power lines, while snow typically needs to accumulate more heavily to have a similar impact.
Last week, outages in the Triangle remained lower than anticipated due to sleet mixing in with the freezing rain, limiting ice buildup. Across the state, about 150,000 customers lost power, but the Triangle saw relatively minor disruptions.
Duke Energy says recent grid upgrades, including automated power rerouting technology, also helped shorten the length and severity of outages. The company is monitoring the forecast closely and has crews ready to respond.
Residents are advised to use the time before the storm to arrange for professional tree trimming if needed and to be aware that hazards such as slippery roads and downed lines may persist even after snow or ice ends.
Just curious…
