Viral Video Reignites Outrage Over Wake County Deputy’s Shooting of Family Dog
A Wake County family is revisiting a painful memory after a civil rights attorney’s YouTube video reignited public interest in the fatal shooting of their dog by a sheriff’s deputy last April.
The Briggs family’s Belgian Malinois, Zelda, was shot and killed when a deputy entered their home while serving a civil summons. In October, the family obtained the deputy’s body camera footage through a formal request.
The incident, largely quiet in the public eye since spring, has drawn new scrutiny following a video posted by West Virginia-based Civil Rights Attorney John Bryan, which includes both bodycam and surveillance footage. The video has amassed more than 1.5 million views and tens of thousands of comments.
The footage shows the deputy entering the Briggs home before encountering the dog. According to Bryan, the lack of visible concern or remorse by the deputy stood out. The family said they were grateful their children were not home at the time of the incident.
The Wake County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the deputy involved has not been with the department since September 5, 2025. In a statement, the office acknowledged public concern and extended condolences to the Briggs family for the loss of their pet.
Just curious…
What’s your reaction to the deputy-involved shooting of the Briggs family’s dog
- 😡 Outraged — The footage shows a clear misuse of authority.
- 😢 Heartbroken — It's a tragic loss for the family, regardless of intent.
- 🤔 Unsure — I’d like to know more about the circumstances before forming an opinion.
- 👮 Supportive — Law enforcement officers face tough decisions in unpredictable situations.

An elephant's trunk contains an astonishing number of muscles, with estimates ranging around 40,000 individual muscles, organized into larger groups, allowing for incredible strength and dexterity, far surpassing the total muscles in a human body. These muscles form a complex network, similar to octopus tentacles, enabling tasks from picking up a blade of grass to lifting heavy objects.
