Two Planes Damaged in Ground Collision at RDU

On the morning of New Year’s Day, two planes were damaged at Raleigh-Durham International Airport after an Avelo Airlines aircraft being towed made contact with a parked Southwest Airlines plane. The incident occurred without passengers on board either plane and no injuries were reported.

Airport officials stated that operations at RDU continued without disruption following the incident. The Avelo flight scheduled to depart for New Haven at 8:30 a.m. was canceled, and the airline began inspecting the affected aircraft.

Southwest Airlines confirmed that the damage was to the right horizontal stabilizer of its parked aircraft. Their maintenance team is currently assessing the extent of the damage.

Both airlines indicated that they are taking appropriate maintenance steps and will communicate directly with customers whose travel plans may be affected.

Alaska has the longest east-to-west width of any U.S. state, stretching over 2,000 miles, while Hawaii is often considered the widest due to its island chain's vast span across the Pacific, though Alaska's extreme Aleutian Islands technically make it the furthest west and east, giving it the overall largest dimension.
