Cary Readers Support School Security Measures

A clear majority of Cary Spotlight readers favor adding more security to Wake County schools, including weapons detection systems. More than 70% of poll respondents voiced support for the idea, reflecting widespread concern about campus safety.

At the same time, a notable share of readers expressed caution. Some are open to change but concerned about the effects on daily student life. Others emphasized that schools should maintain a welcoming environment while enhancing security.

In written feedback, readers urged leaders to take a holistic view. Comments pointed to the need for increased mental health services, better pay for educators, and full funding for public education. Fiscal responsibility also came up, with some stressing that improvements should not lead to higher taxes.

The responses suggest that while enhanced security is welcomed, readers want it integrated into a broader, student-focused approach.

What Cary Will Miss About Ashworth Drugs

Ashworth Drugs has officially closed after serving the Cary community for nearly 66 years, and readers of Cary Spotlight reflected on what made the store so memorable in Issue #122 (February 22, 2024). The responses underscored just how much the downtown Cary institution meant to the community.

The store’s iconic soda fountain, especially its hot dogs and orangeade, topped the list, with 39% of readers selecting it as what they’ll miss most. Another 29% pointed to the sense of nostalgia and personal memories tied to the store, while 18% valued the personal touch of the Ashworth family. Smaller groups cited the community atmosphere and other unique aspects.

Reader comments painted a picture of a business that felt more like a second home. Many shared stories of multi-generational visits, while others remembered the staff by name and highlighted the familiarity and kindness they brought to each interaction. The sentiment was clear: this was a place where customers were known personally, not by prescription numbers.

With its closure, Cary has lost not just a long-standing business, but a piece of its cultural and emotional fabric. Ashworth Drugs leaves behind a legacy built on service, community, and memories that span generations.
