Wake Schools Reevaluate Safety Plans After Recent Incident

Wake County Public School System officials are reevaluating security strategies amid growing concerns about safety at school events. During a committee meeting, leaders discussed existing procedures and the need for adaptable planning ahead of large gatherings. These include collaborative security assessments that involve multiple stakeholders.

The district is exploring the potential implementation of weapons detection systems. While effective, such systems would require continuous operation and represent a shift in how security is managed on campus.

Officials also reviewed tools currently in use. The Rave panic button app, widely adopted among staff, has been used to alert emergency services in four separate incidents. The Verkada Visitor Management System, meanwhile, prevented access by three registered sex offenders last year.

These updates reflect the district’s ongoing efforts to respond to both current challenges and evolving safety needs. Read Full Story

Carolina Circus Festival Returns to Cary with Magic and Mystery

Downtown Cary Park will host the Carolina Circus Festival on Saturday, September 13, from 3 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The free event features a full lineup of aerial performances, acrobatics, fire and LED shows, and interactive workshops designed for participants of all ages and skill levels.

Attendees can also explore an arts market showcasing local vendors and artisans while enjoying food and refreshments from on-site food trucks. This year’s theme, Magic and Mystery, adds a whimsical element to the performances and activities planned throughout the day.

The festival, now in its fifth year, is organized as a nonprofit with a mission to celebrate circus arts while raising awareness for mental health and suicide prevention. Proceeds will be directed to the American Suicide Prevention Association.

Sponsored by Downtown Cary Park and Cary Magazine, the event is designed as a community gathering that welcomes all ages. It is not a drop-off program, so parents are asked to remain with their children. The festival will be held rain or shine, with accessibility accommodations available upon request. carolinacircusfestival.com
