What’s Open and Closed in Cary for Juneteenth
In a move to support housing diversity and accommodate a changing population, the Cary Town Council has approved updates to the Land Development Ordinance that ease restrictions on Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs). These small secondary residences—ranging from garage apartments to detached cottages—can now be added more easily by homeowners, subject to state codes and, where applicable, HOA guidelines.
ADUs are a cornerstone of Cary’s 2021 Housing Plan and the Imagine Cary Community Plan. Officials say they offer practical solutions for families caring for aging parents, housing young adults, or supporting loved ones with special needs. The change is intended to give residents more choices while maintaining neighborhood standards.
To guide residents through the process, Cary has released a Citizen Guide to Accessory Dwelling Units available on its website, along with planning tools and design standards. The update reflects the town’s long-term vision of inclusive and adaptable housing for a growing community. Cary officials encourage residents to consult the town’s ADU Citizen Guide and planning resources available at housing.carync.gov.
Just curious…
Cary has made it easier for homeowners to build Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs)—like in-law suites, backyard cottages, and garage apartments.
Cary Marks Juneteenth with History, Music, and Community
Juneteenth, the oldest known celebration marking the end of slavery in the United States, traces its roots to June 19, 1865, when news of freedom finally reached enslaved people in Texas—over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued. Though its recognition has grown nationwide, Juneteenth has long served as a cornerstone of remembrance and resilience within the African American community.
Cary has embraced this holiday not just through symbolic gestures, but through community-led programming and institutional recognition. Since 2019, the town has hosted annual Juneteenth events that blend education with celebration. Juneteenth is now a paid holiday for Cary employees, reinforcing the Town’s commitment to equity and inclusion.
This year’s Juneteenth celebration will take place on Saturday, June 21, beginning at 3 p.m. at Downtown Cary Park. The program, curated by historian Darrell Stover, will include music, reenactments, and spoken word tributes designed to evoke the journey from enslavement to freedom. In addition to the live event, the Cary Arts Center and Downtown Cary Park will be illuminated in red, yellow, and green from June 19–21 as a visual tribute to African heritage and the enduring struggle for justice.

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇
The Pyrenees is a mountain range that forms a natural border between France and Spain, stretching about 491 kilometers (305 miles) from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea. These rugged peaks divide the Iberian Peninsula from the rest of Europe and are known for their stunning scenery, rich biodiversity, and picturesque villages. The range is also home to the small country of Andorra, nestled high in the mountains. Popular for hiking, skiing, and mountaineering, the Pyrenees are both a geographic and cultural landmark.
