Town of Cary Releases Quarterly Report

Credit: Town of Cary, NC

The Town of Cary’s newly released Quarterly Report provides a snapshot of the town’s achievements and priorities from October to December. The holiday season was a highlight, with record-breaking attendance at Heart of the Holidays events and national recognition from Southern Living, naming Cary one of the South’s “Cutest Christmas Towns.” A lighthearted renaming to “Carey” in honor of Mariah Carey even caught the singer’s attention online.

Sports tourism remained a focus as Cary hosted the NCAA Men’s and Women’s College Cups at WakeMed Soccer Park. The town also secured a long-term role as a host for NCAA Division I soccer and Division II baseball championships, reinforcing its reputation for top-tier athletic facilities and event execution.

Financially, Cary wrapped up Fiscal Year 2024 with a positive audit, reporting reserves above policy standards. However, inflation remains a challenge for construction projects, leading to a reassessment of costs and priorities ahead of the annual budget meeting in February.

Bird Flu Returns to Wake County for the First Time Since 2023

Wake County has reported its first case of bird flu in nearly two years, with an infected owl currently undergoing confirmatory testing. Wildlife experts are not surprised by the development, as the virus tends to spread more easily during winter migration when birds congregate in greater numbers. The case follows a recent positive test in Henderson County and an earlier outbreak at a Hyde County poultry farm.

Despite its prevalence among birds, health officials maintain that the virus poses minimal risk to humans and does not impact food safety. Wildlife agencies continue to track cases as they emerge, particularly during the colder months when migratory activity is at its peak.

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Question 👇👇👇

Katherine Johnson was a pioneering NASA mathematician whose precise calculations were critical in sending astronaut John Glenn into orbit during the 1962 Mercury-Atlas 6 mission. Her expertise in orbital mechanics helped ensure the success of early space missions, and she later contributed to the Apollo moon landing. Despite facing racial and gender discrimination as an African-American woman, Johnson's work was vital to NASA's achievements. Her contributions were widely recognized later in life, and she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015.
