Cary Middle Schooler Secures Third Place in National Spelling Bee

Ananya Rao Prassanna, a seventh-grader at Davis Drive Middle School in Cary, has achieved third place in the fiercely contested Scripps National Spelling Bee finals, held Thursday night. This marks a significant milestone for Ananya, as it was her third attempt at the national title, showing remarkable progress from her previous finishes of 49th in 2022 and 74th in 2023.

The finals this year were notably competitive, featuring 245 spellers, but only two managed to secure the third-place spot, including Ananya. Participants in the Elite 8 finals also hailed from nearby locations such as Durham, Fayetteville, and Smithfield, highlighting the strong representation from North Carolina.

Ananya's impressive run concluded in the 14th round when she misspelled "murrina," confusing it with "marina." Despite this, her achievement places her among the top young spellers in the nation, celebrated by her school and community. Read more

1.6 Pounds of Marijuana Discovered in Student’s Backpack; Father Charged

In an unsettling incident at Cleveland Elementary School in Clayton, school administrators encountered a troubling scene when they discovered multiple bags of marijuana, weighing a total of 1.6 pounds, inside a student's backpack on Wednesday.

The discovery prompted a swift response from a school resource officer who, upon examining the contents, summoned a narcotics detective to investigate further.

Reviewing the school's security footage, investigators observed Calvin Bernard Carter, a 33-year-old man from Garner, handing a backpack to his child upon entering the school.

This seemingly routine gesture has led to significant legal repercussions for Carter, who is now facing charges related to the incident. Read more
