No Common Source Identified in Wake County Cyclosporiasis Outbreak
North Carolina health officials are investigating an outbreak of cyclosporiasis that has resulted in 307 confirmed cases statewide, with Wake County reporting 216 of those infections and five hospitalizations.
The illness is caused by the Cyclospora parasite, which is typically spread through contaminated fresh produce or water. Symptoms primarily affect the digestive system and often include severe diarrhea.
Despite ongoing investigations by local, state, and federal health agencies, no common source has been identified. Investigators say lettuce and salad greens have emerged as recurring exposures during patient interviews, but no specific product has been linked to the outbreak.
Residents are encouraged to practice good food safety by washing produce and hands thoroughly, cooking food when appropriate, and avoiding potentially contaminated food or water while the investigation continues.

International Rugby Returns to Cary With USA vs. Spain Match

International rugby returns to Cary on Saturday, July 19, as the USA Eagles face Spain at WakeMed Soccer Park. The match is the final stop of the inaugural World Rugby Nations Cup U.S. series and marks the first international rugby match played in Cary in more than a decade.
The day features more than just the main event. A free Cary Touch Youth Day clinic will be held from 10 a.m. to noon for children ages 4 to 12, giving young athletes the opportunity to learn the basics of passing, catching, and playing rugby.
The Cary 7s high school tournament also returns, with matches beginning at 9 a.m. The competition includes boys and girls under-19 teams from across the region.
Before kickoff, fans can enjoy the USA Fanfest from 5 to 7 p.m. outside the stadium, featuring food trucks, games, face painting, and photo opportunities. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early, purchase tickets in advance, follow parking directions, and prepare for warm summer weather.
