Three Wake County Schools Deemed Unsafe

Engineers have identified structural issues at Creech Road, Davis Drive, and Durant Road elementary schools, prompting Wake County Public Schools to temporarily close the buildings until repairs can be completed.

The concerns involve how certain walls connect to the buildings' structural framework. Officials say additional reinforcements will be added to strengthen the schools.

The timing is especially challenging for Durant Road Elementary, where year-round classes are scheduled to begin in the coming weeks. District leaders say they are working quickly to complete evaluations and develop repair plans.

The school board has given the superintendent authority to approve repair contracts immediately, while district staff continue developing alternative learning arrangements should construction extend into the school year.

Marla Dorrel Park to Close for Repaving Through Aug. 7

Visitors to Marla Dorrel Park will need to make alternate plans later this month as the park temporarily closes for maintenance.

The Town of Cary announced that Marla Dorrel Park, including the popular Kids Together Playground, will be closed from July 20 through Aug. 7 while crews complete a park-wide repaving project. During the closure, all park amenities will be unavailable.

Located on Thurston Drive, Marla Dorrel Park is home to the inclusive Kids Together Playground, which is designed to provide children of all abilities with opportunities to play together. The park also features walking trails and connects to MacDonald Woods Park through a pedestrian overpass.

Town officials thanked residents for their patience as improvements are made to help keep Cary's parks safe and well maintained.

World Cup Semifinals Set

The 2026 FIFA World Cup has reached its final week, with four of the world's biggest football powers still standing. France, Spain, England, and defending champions Argentina have all earned semifinal berths after a thrilling quarterfinal round that featured standout performances, extra-time drama, and plenty of star power.

  • France 2–0 Morocco: France ended Morocco's remarkable tournament run behind another brilliant performance from Kylian Mbappé, who scored his eighth goal of the World Cup to remain tied with Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot.

  • Spain 2–1 Belgium: Spain punched its ticket to the semifinals by edging a dangerous Belgium side in a tightly contested match. The victory sets up a blockbuster showdown with France.

  • England 2–1 Norway (AET): Jude Bellingham delivered when it mattered most, scoring a decisive extra-time brace to eliminate Erling Haaland and Norway and send England to its first World Cup semifinal since 2018.

  • Argentina 3–1 Switzerland (AET): The defending champions survived a major scare against 10-man Switzerland before Julián Álvarez broke the deadlock with a stunning 112th-minute goal. Argentina pulled away late to book a meeting with England.

📅 Semifinal Schedule (EDT)

  • Tuesday, July 14: France vs. Spain — 3:00 p.m. (Dallas)

  • Wednesday, July 15: England vs. Argentina — 3:00 p.m. (Atlanta)

  • Saturday, July 18: Third-Place Match — 5:00 p.m. (Miami)

  • Sunday, July 19: FIFA World Cup Final — 3:00 p.m. (MetLife Stadium, New Jersey)

📰 Story to Watch

Messi vs. England: If the schedule holds, Wednesday's semifinal will mark Lionel Messi's first-ever international match against England and the first World Cup meeting between England and Argentina in a semifinal, adding another chapter to one of football's most compelling rivalries.

With just four teams remaining, every match carries championship stakes as the countdown to Sunday's World Cup Final begins.

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇
A: science fiction and fantasy genres

The Hugo and Nebula awards are given for outstanding writing in the science fiction and fantasy genres (also known as speculative fiction).
