Burn Survivor Shares Powerful Firework Safety Message at Cary Event

A burn survivor shared her story in Cary as North Carolina launched its Fourth of July firework safety campaign, urging residents to leave fireworks to the professionals.

Summary

State officials kicked off North Carolina's 2026 Fourth of July firework safety campaign at Cary Fire Station No. 9 with a message centered on prevention and education.

The event featured burn survivor Ginger Peters, who suffered life-threatening injuries after a sparkler ignited her clothing during a birthday celebration. Her story is featured in a new documentary highlighting the risks associated with sparklers.

Fire officials reminded residents that fireworks cause hundreds of emergency room visits across North Carolina each year and warned that many aerial fireworks remain illegal under state law.

The campaign encourages families to attend professional fireworks displays, keep children away from fireworks, follow burn bans during the ongoing drought, and celebrate responsibly.
