Wake County Control Center Set to Lead Storm Response Efforts
Duke Energy is entering hurricane season with a focus on improving outage response and grid reliability across the region. Central to those efforts is the company’s distribution control center in Wake County, which operates 24 hours a day and coordinates restoration work during emergencies.
Employees at the center monitor the electric system, communicate with crews in the field, and help manage customer impacts when outages occur. The facility is expected to play a major role during tropical systems and other severe weather events that affect the area.
The company is also expanding the use of self-healing technology, which automatically identifies outages and reroutes electricity when possible. Duke Energy says the technology helped avoid about 1.2 million customer outages across the Carolinas last year and can sometimes restore service in a matter of seconds.
Beyond technology upgrades, Duke Energy has invested in physical improvements to the grid, including replacing aging wooden poles with steel structures and conducting extensive tree-trimming work. The company says these measures are intended to reduce storm damage and accelerate recovery efforts when severe weather strikes.
