Cary Schools Among 15 Wake Campuses Facing HVAC Breakdowns
A week of record heat exposed ongoing infrastructure problems across Wake County schools, where HVAC failures affected 15 campuses before state testing begins. Joyner Elementary School in Raleigh became a focal point after repeated outages forced some parents to send students with box fans or consider keeping them home.
The issues also reached schools in western Wake County, including Salem Elementary in Apex and Reedy Creek Middle School in Cary. Some classrooms reportedly climbed into the 80s while outdoor temperatures pushed into the 90s.
District leaders said maintenance crews are responding to problems across the county, but acknowledged that aging equipment and staffing shortages have complicated efforts to keep systems running consistently. Wake County schools have already experienced dozens of closures or early dismissals tied to HVAC problems during the current school year.
Officials said the district is increasing spending on HVAC upgrades and deferred maintenance, though administrators warned that maintaining older buildings and hiring enough technicians will remain a major budget challenge in the years ahead.
Just curious..
How concerned are you about HVAC problems in Wake County schools ahead of end-of-grade testing?
- 🔥 Extremely concerned — classrooms are too hot for effective learning
- 😟 Somewhat concerned — the district needs faster repairs
- 😐 Not too concerned — temporary issues happen
- 🏗️ The bigger issue is aging school infrastructure
- 📚 Testing should be postponed if schools lose AC
- ❄️ Schools without reliable cooling should close for the day

GoCary’s Rack-n-Roll Program Makes Exploring Cary Easier
As Cary’s Bike Month celebrations continue, GoCary is encouraging residents to combine cycling and public transit to explore more of the town without the need for a long ride.
The transit system’s Rack-n-Roll program allows riders to bring bicycles aboard any fixed-route GoCary bus using front-mounted bike racks available at no additional cost. The program is designed to help cyclists reach parks, greenways, trails, shopping centers and other destinations across Cary while avoiding longer or more difficult rides.
Town officials say the service offers an easy way for both casual riders and experienced cyclists to extend their trips, especially during the warmer spring months when outdoor activity increases across the Triangle.
Plan your ride today at gocary.org or on the GoCary app.
Have you ever used the bike racks on a GoCary bus?
