Question: The Thousand Islands are located in what body of water?
(Answer at the bottom of the newsletter.)

Parents across Wake County often wonder how their teens can build a creative portfolio that stands out when applying to college.
The 16th Annual Wake County Teen Art Exhibition in Cary is designed to give student artists exactly that opportunity. The exhibition displays work from students across roughly 50 Wake County schools in a real, professionally curated gallery setting - the kind of experience students can list on a resume or college application. The exhibition runs May 6-27, 2026.
The community is welcome to attend the free public reception and awards ceremony on May 10, where $20,000 in prizes will be awarded to students and their schools. Coming soon: May 10, 2026.

Cary Trading Card Shop Reopens After $45,000 Burglary
A burglary at Triangle Area Trading Cards in Cary led to the arrest of 20-year-old James Fillingame, who appeared in court Wednesday following the theft of more than $45,000 in collectible trading cards. The store owners attended the hearing after watching the break-in unfold live through their security cameras early Tuesday morning.
According to the owners and court documents, two masked suspects broke through the store’s glass entrance around 5 a.m. and quickly filled garbage bags with valuable Pokémon and Magic: The Gathering cards. The theft reportedly lasted only a few minutes before the suspects attempted to flee.
Police responded rapidly after receiving a silent alarm notification and were able to apprehend one suspect near the store. A second suspect, who authorities say is 17 years old, was later found hiding nearby with the help of a K-9 unit.
Despite damage to the storefront, the business reopened the next day with support from loyal customers. The owners said they believe most of the stolen cards have been recovered and plan to continue operating despite the incident.

Cyberattack May Have Impacted Wake County Students and Teachers
Wake County Public School System officials notified parents Wednesday about a cyberattack involving Canvas, the online learning platform widely used across North Carolina schools. The district said the breach may have exposed personal information belonging to current students and staff members.
According to the district, Canvas owner Instructure discovered unauthorized access tied to an attack that began April 25 and was detected four days later. The company said it immediately blocked the attacker’s access and began investigating the incident.
School officials emphasized that there is currently no evidence that highly sensitive information, including passwords, dates of birth, government identification numbers, or financial records, was exposed during the breach.
Wake County schools said they are continuing to work with Instructure to determine exactly what data may have been accessed and whether additional steps will be necessary to protect affected students and employees. Learn more here
