Wake County Shelter Launches $5 Pet Adoption Campaign

Wake County officials have announced a limited-time adoption campaign at the Wake County Animal Center, reducing all adoption fees to $5 for a two-week period. The initiative, running from April 25 through May 10, coincides with National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day and aims to increase the number of animals placed in permanent homes.

Local leaders say the campaign is both a celebration of shelter pets and a reminder of the benefits of adoption. The effort also seeks to engage the community in supporting animal welfare through direct action.

At present, dozens of animals remain at the shelter, with many more in foster care. Officials emphasize that all pets are fully prepared for adoption, having received necessary medical care including vaccinations, microchipping, and spay or neuter procedures.

The shelter remains open daily, and residents are encouraged to browse available animals online or visit in person to participate in the campaign.

All pets available for adoption can be viewed through a gallery on the county website.

Men, You've Been Misinformed

Men's skin is about 25% thicker than women's, but thicker skin doesn't mean better aging. It means delayed collapse. For years, your skin looks resilient. Then collagen declines, and when it does, it drops hard: deeper wrinkles, heavier under-eye bags, more dark spots showing up all at once.

Most men were never taught to get ahead of this. Women were. And by the time the signs show up, you're playing catch-up.

Particle Face Cream was built precisely for this. One 6-in-1 formula engineered for men's skin — reduces eye bags, dark spots, and wrinkles, restores firmness, hydrates deeply, and revives dull tone. No complicated routine. Over 1,000,000 men already use it. Try it risk-free with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Readers Are Skeptical About Data Center Growth in Wake County

From Cary Spotlight Issue #914

🏗️ Reader Poll Results: How Should Wake County Handle Data Center Development?

As local leaders across the region pump the brakes on data center growth — from Apex's one-year pause to Wendell's moratorium through the end of 2026 — we asked Cary Spotlight readers where they stand. With 32 votes cast, the results sent a clear message: most readers aren't ready to roll out the welcome mat just yet.

Map showing where data centers are allowed, where there's a moratorium and where they're being discussed in Central NC.

📊 Here's how the votes broke down:

🚫 Do not allow large-scale data centers in the county37.50% (winner!)
⏸️ Pause projects until clear regulations and infrastructure plans are in place~34%
📍 Limit development to specific zones only~19%
🤔 Not sure / need more information~13%
📈 Allow development to move forward to support economic growth~3%

Nearly three-quarters of respondents leaned skeptical — either calling for an outright ban or at minimum a pause until proper guardrails are in place. Only a small fraction favored letting development proceed without additional oversight.

💬 What readers had to say:

"Concern about the vast amount of energy — especially water — that is needed."

"These data centers use a lot of electricity. Duke Energy should make the data center owners pay for the infrastructure and power they use. Not ordinary residential and businesses."

Both comments came from readers who chose the "pause" option, and they echo what's driving concern across the region: data centers are massive consumers of electricity and water, and many residents feel that cost shouldn't fall on everyday ratepayers and homeowners.

Wake County commissioners are already beginning to grapple with these questions at the policy level, and if our reader poll is any indication, they'll have plenty of community sentiment to consider as they do.

Turns out "server farm" sounds a lot less charming once you see the utility bill.

Cary Readers Choose Books Over Bytes

From Cary Spotlight Issue #911

📚 Reader Poll Results: What Do You Love Most About Your Local Library?

Just in time for National Library Week (April 19–25), we asked Cary Spotlight readers what keeps them coming back to their local library — and the results were about as clear-cut as a bestseller list. With Wake County Public Libraries marking the week under the theme "Find Your Joy," it turns out readers already know exactly where they find theirs.

📊 Here's how the votes stacked up:

📚 Borrowing books and discovering new reads59.26% (winner!)
🎧 Access to audiobooks, movies and digital resources~15%
🎪 Community programs and events~11%
🪑 A quiet place to relax or work~7%
❤️ The friendly library staff~11%
📶 Free Wi-Fi and study spaces~4%

Nearly 6 in 10 readers pointed straight to the stacks — proof that no matter how many streaming services we subscribe to, there's still something irreplaceable about browsing the shelves and walking out with an armful of books.

💬 What readers had to say:

"And of course the no late fees!"

That one comment probably resonated with a lot of us who still have fines-related flashbacks from the old days. The elimination of late fees has quietly become one of the library system's most beloved upgrades — a small change with a big impact on how welcoming the library feels for everyone.

With millions of visits, circulating materials, and program participants logged this past year, it's clear the Cary community sees its libraries as much more than a place to pick up a book. Whether you're there for storytime, a study session, or just a quiet corner to breathe, the library keeps showing up for residents in a big way.

Now if only they'd add a coffee bar — some of us could really settle in.

Just curious…

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇

A) Atacama Desert

The Atacama Desert in northern Chile is the world's driest non-polar desert. Located between the Andes Mountains and the Chilean Coast Range, some parts of this plateau have never recorded rain. It is so arid that NASA has used its landscape to test Mars rovers, and it is generally considered the second-driest place on Earth, after certain spots in the Antarctic Dry Valleys.
