Safety Rules for Busy Cary Greenways

Cary officials are reminding residents to follow greenway rules as trail use increases, emphasizing safety, courtesy and shared responsibility among walkers, runners and cyclists.

Bicyclists are required to travel at safe speeds, with a maximum limit of 15 miles per hour on all greenways. When passing others, riders should slow down and give a clear verbal signal such as “on your left” to alert nearby users.

Pedestrians maintain the right of way on all trails, and users are expected to keep to the right and pass on the left. Officials also advise that anyone stopping along the trail should step off the path to avoid blocking others.

Additional regulations prohibit motorized vehicles and limit greenway use to daylight hours. Pet owners must keep animals on a short leash, clean up waste and walk on the right-hand shoulder.

The town also bans alcohol on greenways and encourages residents to report suspicious activity. Officials say following these guidelines helps ensure the trails remain safe and accessible for all users.

Just curious…

Wake County Enters Extreme Drought

Wake County entered Level 4, or extreme drought, on Thursday as dry conditions worsened across North Carolina. The new designation reflects a sharp decline in rainfall and water availability in a region that is already experiencing its driest start to a year on record.

The Triangle has received just over 6 inches of rain since January 1, leaving Raleigh more than 5 inches below average. At Raleigh-Durham International Airport, officials recorded the lowest year-to-date rainfall total in more than 140 years. In late August 2025, no part of the state was in drought.

State officials say central North Carolina would need 8 to 12 inches of rain in a single month to recover. The drought is now considered the worst in the region since 2008, with current conditions being intensified by the growing season, near record heat and almost no rainfall in April.

The effects are already spreading through the region’s water system. Rivers, lakes and reservoirs are declining, Raleigh is preparing to begin water restrictions, and a statewide burn ban remains in effect. Officials also report that many streams and rivers are at historically low levels.

No Water Restrictions Expected in Cary

Cary officials are monitoring worsening drought conditions across the region but say the town’s water supply remains secure. Jordan Lake, Cary’s primary source of water, is currently above its normal operating level, allowing the town to avoid imposing restrictions for now.

Instead, Cary is continuing its existing conservation strategy, which includes alternate-day outdoor watering and tiered water pricing aimed at reducing excessive use. Officials say these measures help preserve supply while encouraging responsible consumption.

Residents are encouraged to use the Aquastar system to track their water usage, set alerts and detect leaks early. The town also offers additional resources such as water assessments and tools to improve household efficiency.

While no immediate restrictions are planned, Cary officials stress that conservation remains important. The town’s policies are designed to maintain long-term water reliability as drought conditions continue to develop across central North Carolina.

The original name of Austin, the capital of Texas, was Waterloo. In 1839, the hamlet of Waterloo was selected as the new capital of the Republic of Texas and subsequently renamed to honor Stephen F. Austin, the "Father of Texas". The site was chosen for its scenic beauty and central location, despite initial concerns about its vulnerability.
