NC State Alum Returns From Historic Artemis II Moon Mission

NASA’s Artemis II mission ended Friday with a successful splashdown in the Pacific Ocean after nearly ten days in space. The mission marked the first time astronauts traveled around the moon since the Apollo era and set a new record for the farthest distance humans have traveled from Earth.

The crew flew aboard NASA’s Orion spacecraft, which reentered Earth’s atmosphere at extreme speeds before deploying parachutes and landing safely in the Pacific. The mission tested critical spacecraft systems and served as a major milestone for NASA’s renewed push to return astronauts to the moon.

The crew included Christina Koch, a three-time graduate of North Carolina State University. Her role as a mission specialist gives the historic mission a strong connection to North Carolina and the Wolfpack community.

Artemis II is the second step in NASA’s Artemis program. Future missions will test docking operations and eventually attempt to land astronauts near the moon’s south pole later in the decade.

Houston, Cary Is Paying Attention

With NASA's Artemis II mission making history this week — carrying crew on a lunar flyby for the first time in more than 50 years — we asked Cary Spotlight readers how they're feeling about humanity's return to deep space. Turns out, this community is paying close attention.

🏆 Winner: "Very excited – I check in on the updates" Leading with 42.86% of the vote (12 out of 28 confirmed votes), readers in this camp are tuned in and following along as the mission unfolds.

How the rest of the field stacked up:

  • 🔭 Interested – I like seeing the big milestones — ~32%

  • 🌱 Curious – I'm learning more as it happens — ~7%

The Vibe Check Is In, and Cary Isn't Feeling It

From Cary Spotlight | Issue #873 March 14, 2026

😟 Reader Poll Results: Has Your 2026 Outlook Changed?

Back in January, we asked Cary Spotlight readers how hopeful they were heading into the new year. A few months in, we checked back in, and the mood has shifted considerably.

🏆 Winner: "Less hopeful than I was at the start of the year" A decisive 70.37% of respondents — 19 out of 27 votes — say their optimism has faded since January 1. With a new U.S. military engagement underway in Iraq and ongoing uncertainty in Washington, readers aren't shy about what's driving the dip. (Note: survey was take on March 14, 2026).

How the rest of the field stacked up:

  • 🌟 More hopeful than I was on January 1 — ~7%

  • 😐 About the same — cautiously optimistic — ~11%

  • 🤷 No clear feeling yet — ~11%

  • 📋 I didn't answer the original poll — ~11%

Representative Reader Comments:

"I am not very hopeful, with another war started... We need someone who knows how to negotiate PEACE!"

"U.S. Government a mess!"

Just curious…

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇

A) Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania is the most famous mountain peak that is not part of a mountain range. As the highest mountain in Africa (5,895 meters or 19,340 feet) and the world's tallest free-standing mountain, it rises directly from the East African plains rather than being part of a connected range like the Himalayas.
