Question: When did scientists start giving hurricanes human names?

(Answer at the bottom of the newsletter.)

Parents across the Triangle often wonder how their teens can build meaningful leadership experience that truly stands out when applying to college.

An upcoming Hum Sub Youth Leadership Summit in Cary is designed to help students begin exploring those opportunities. The event invites students in Grades 8–11 from across the Triangle to learn about leadership, entrepreneurship, and ways young people can start building experiences that colleges value.

Parents are welcome to attend to learn more about opportunities to help their children prepare for college applications. Coming soon: 2 May 2026.

Bomb Threat Clears Apex Middle School

Lufkin Road Middle School in Apex was evacuated Wednesday morning after a bomb threat prompted an immediate response from school administrators and law enforcement. About 1,100 students and staff were moved to the school’s football field while police searched the campus.

Parents were notified that students would be dismissed early and asked to follow normal pickup procedures. The sudden dismissal led to heavy traffic and long carpool lines, leaving many parents waiting for hours to reach their children.

Authorities completed a full search of the campus and gave the all-clear shortly before the school’s normal dismissal time. No suspicious devices or individuals were found.

The incident came just days after another bomb threat prompted an evacuation at a Durham charter school. Police say such threats are felony crimes in North Carolina and can carry serious penalties.
