Cary Family Displaced After Early Morning Garage Fire Destroys Home

A house fire on Belhaven Road in Cary early Friday morning left a home and a vehicle in the garage destroyed. Firefighters responded shortly before 2 a.m. and found the home fully engulfed in flames.

Three adults were inside the home at the time but were able to escape safely without injuries. Emergency crews extinguished the fire and remained on scene afterward to check for hotspots.

Officials said the fire appears to have started in the garage. The vehicle inside was destroyed, but the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The displaced family is currently receiving assistance from the American Red Cross as they search for temporary housing.

We’re rewinding the feed to spotlight a standout moment, story, or snapshot from Cary’s past. Let’s scroll back and see…

UConn Stands Out as the Strongest Team Left

UConn enters the final stretch of the tournament looking like the most complete team in the field. The Huskies have advanced with a formula that tends to hold up in March: disciplined defense, efficient interior scoring, and production spread across the roster rather than concentrated in one player.

That balance is a major reason they stand out as the safest pick to win the national title. Teams that rebound well and defend with consistency usually give themselves the best chance in the tournament, and UConn has done both at a high level.

A projected championship matchup against Michigan would offer an intriguing contrast. The Wolverines have the kind of offense that can catch fire at the right moment and change a game quickly. Arizona remains dangerous because of its tempo, which can pressure opponents into mistakes, while Illinois has enough scoring power to knock off any team when its shots are falling.

Still, if there is one team that looks best built to finish the job, it is UConn. Cary Spotlight prediction: UConn cuts down the nets.

Cary's Favorite Airport Shuttle Has a Face You Know

From Cary Spotlight | Issue #893 April 3, 2026

With RDU set to raise parking rates on April 13, Economy 3 climbing to $14.50 a day, Premier parking jumping to $34, it's worth asking: how are Cary readers actually getting to the airport? Turns out, most of them figured this out a long time ago.

It turns out most of us have a very reliable (and free) transportation system: someone who loves us.

It wasn't even close. "A friend or family member drops me off" ran away with the runway, capturing 45.71% of the vote — nearly half of all respondents. Apparently, the best airport shuttle in the Cary area has a familiar face behind the wheel.

Rideshares gave it a solid effort, with Uber/Lyft or a taxi coming in second at an estimated ~29%. Parking at the airport landed third at roughly ~14% — a choice that readers, based on the comments, are not thrilled about. Shuttle or other transportation and "I rarely fly out of RDU" each accounted for an estimated ~6% of the vote.

Representative Reader Comments:

"Fortunately I live only about five miles away."

"Parking and Uber is way too expensive. It's a rip off — we pay taxes for this."

Just curious…
