Question: From what language did English borrow the word "lollipop"?

(Answer at the bottom of the newsletter.)

Parents across the Triangle often wonder how their teens can build meaningful leadership experience that truly stands out when applying to college.

An upcoming Hum Sub Youth Leadership Summit in Cary is designed to help students begin exploring those opportunities. The event invites students in Grades 8–11 from across the Triangle to learn about leadership, entrepreneurship, and ways young people can start building experiences that colleges value.

How Cary 311 Quietly Powers Town Services

Cary 311 serves as the town’s central non-emergency contact point, helping residents access services such as paying water bills, reporting infrastructure issues, and registering for recreation programs. Staffed by citizen advocates, the system connects callers with the appropriate department and provides tracking numbers for service requests.

The platform also gives the town valuable insight into community needs. By collecting and analyzing service request data, Cary staff can identify trends and prioritize resources more effectively.

Technology plays a major role in the system’s capabilities. Integration with tools like Salesforce and ArcGIS allows Cary 311 to use geospatial mapping and artificial intelligence to manage requests and improve communication across departments.

The new Cary 311 Version 2.0 expands these capabilities by introducing an omnichannel approach, allowing residents to interact with the town through phone, online platforms, email, social media, or in person. The goal is to create a more proactive and responsive system that strengthens the connection between Cary government and its residents.

Hippity Hoppity! Cary's Easter Egg Hunt Fills Fast Each Year

If you've never heard of the Hippity Hoppity Easter Egg Hunt, you're not alone — but you'll want to put it on your radar right now. Hosted every spring by the Town of Cary, this free, family-friendly event takes over Field #4 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex, one of the most impressive sports facilities in the state.

Kids ages 3 through 12 are welcome to bring their Easter baskets and get in on the fun. The 2026 event — held March 29 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. — filled up fast, which tells you everything you need to know about how popular it has become.

Arriving early is half the fun. Gates open at 4 p.m. for check-in, and the time before the egg hunt kicks off at 4:45 p.m. is packed with entertainment. Families can watch a magician, a juggler, and an LED hooper artist, and kids can snap a photo with the Easter Bunny before the scramble begins.

When hunt time arrives, children are divided into three age groups — ages 3–5, 6–9, and 10–12 — each with their own section of the field. All groups start at the exact same time, so everyone gets a fair shot at the eggs. Just remember to bring your own basket!

Here's the big thing to know: registration is required for every child, and spots go quickly. Cary residents get to register first (watch for the December opening date), with non-resident registration opening a couple of weeks later. If you missed the 2026 hunt, now is the time to plan ahead so you're ready the moment registration opens next year.

The event runs rain or shine, so no need to worry about the weather. Just head over, let the little ones fill their baskets, and enjoy one of Cary's most beloved springtime traditions.

Duke Near Full Strength as Foster Eyes Sweet 16 Return

Duke junior guard Caleb Foster may return for the team’s Sweet 16 matchup against St. John’s after missing five games with a fractured right foot. His family said there is a 50-50 chance he will play Friday night.

Foster suffered the injury during Duke’s regular-season finale against North Carolina and had surgery on March 8. Initially expected to miss more time, he has progressed quickly in recovery and participated in practice in Washington, D.C.

Head coach Jon Scheyer said the decision will likely be made close to game time depending on how Foster responds physically. If he plays, it will be less than three weeks since the injury.

In Foster’s absence, freshman Cayden Boozer has stepped up with strong scoring performances. Duke center Patrick Ngongba has also returned to the lineup and is expected to play in the Sweet 16.

English borrowed the word "lollipop" from the Romani language (specifically Anglo-Romani). It is derived from the Romani phrase loli phabai, which literally translates to "red apple". This term originally referred to candied apples sold by Romani people, later evolving into the term for hard candy on a stick.
