Yellow Pollen Wave Hits Cary
Central North Carolina is seeing its peak tree pollen levels this week, leaving a visible yellow layer of pine pollen across the Triangle and triggering seasonal allergies for many residents in Cary and nearby communities.
Health specialists say the pollen coating cars and outdoor surfaces is mostly pine pollen, but smaller and less visible pollens from oak and maple trees often cause stronger allergy symptoms. These allergens can lead to itchy eyes, sneezing, runny noses, and asthma flare ups.
Data from the North Carolina Division of Air Quality shows that tree pollen levels surged early this week, reaching the highest levels recorded so far this season at the state’s monitoring station in Raleigh.
Experts believe the sudden intensity may be linked to colder winter conditions that delayed the pollen cycle. As temperatures rose, multiple tree species released pollen at once, leading to a noticeable spike in airborne allergens that may continue until grass pollen arrives later in the spring.

Cary and Wake Residents Urged to Ignore Fake Court Notice Texts
Air travel is ramping up for spring break at the same time TSA staffing challenges persist across the country. Federal funding issues have left TSA workers without pay once again, contributing to employee departures and increased absences.
The Department of Homeland Security reports that hundreds of TSA employees have quit, while others are not reporting to work. These shortages have led to longer lines and delays at several airports nationwide.
At Raleigh-Durham International Airport, officials say operations have remained relatively stable despite the broader disruptions. Travelers are still encouraged to arrive early to allow time for security screening.
The surge in travel demand is significant, with a large share of North Carolina residents planning trips. While staffing shortages are a factor, weather-related issues have also played a role in recent flight delays and schedule changes.
