How Cary Turned Sports Venues Into an Economic Strategy

In Cary, sports venues do more than host competition. They help drive tourism, support local businesses, and give residents access to some of the region’s best recreational facilities. From soccer and baseball to tennis, the town’s investment in sports infrastructure has become a practical economic strategy as well as a community amenity.

  1. WakeMed Soccer Park stands at the center of that effort. The venue is home to North Carolina FC and the North Carolina Courage, and it regularly draws major national and international events. Its role as a host site for NCAA championships has been especially significant. Cary has staged more than 40 NCAA events there since 2003, and the town has now been selected to continue hosting championships through 2038. Large scale events can bring an immediate payoff. The Soccer Tournament, known as TST, generated an estimated $9 million to $10 million in economic impact from a single event, underscoring how one venue can raise Cary’s profile well beyond the region.

  2. The USA Baseball National Training Complex plays a similar role for baseball. It serves as a development hub for many of the country’s top amateur players and hosts tournaments that range from youth competition to national level events. The complex contributes about $5 million in annual economic impact, but its significance also extends beyond the field. Built with features such as efficient lighting and stormwater protections, it reflects how Cary has tied sports development to broader environmental and long-term planning goals.

  3. Cary Tennis Park rounds out the town’s portfolio of major venues. With more than 30 courts, it is one of the largest public tennis facilities in the Southeast. It supports both everyday local play and high level competition, including USTA events and professional tournaments such as the Cary Tennis Classic. That mix of community access and elite events helps produce an estimated $4 million to $5 million in annual economic impact.

Taken together, the three venues generate millions in visitor spending each year and support a wide network of hotels, restaurants, and local businesses. They also help Cary attract repeat events and national attention, reinforcing its reputation as a reliable host city. The strategy is straightforward: invest in quality facilities, use sports to bring in visitors, and turn that momentum into long-term economic and civic value.

Cary Enhances Popular Trails

Cary is introducing two upgrades to its greenway system focused on safety and long-term planning. The first involves adding artistic centerline striping along portions of the Black Creek and White Oak Creek greenways, two of the most heavily used corridors in the network.

The striping is intended to improve visibility in areas where users may encounter tighter curves or reduced sightlines, such as near underpasses. While installation may require temporary lane adjustments, the greenways will remain open throughout the process.

In parallel, the town is expanding its use of Eco-Counters by installing 10 additional devices along busy routes. These counters collect data on pedestrian and bicycle traffic, including direction and, in some cases, speed, without capturing personal information.

The data will help Cary better understand how residents and visitors use the trails, supporting future planning and investment decisions across its extensive greenway system.

Meow City Closes Cary Storefront, Moves Fully Online

Meow City has ended its retail operations in Cary following the expiration of its lease, citing high costs and limited in-store traffic. The move marks a transition away from a traditional storefront model after three years in business.

Despite the closure, the brand will remain active. Its online store will continue to offer the same range of products, allowing customers to shop as before without a physical location.

The company also plans to maintain a local presence by participating in pop-up markets and events ברח the Triangle. This approach allows the business to stay connected with its customer base while adapting to changing economic conditions.

With additional plans in development, Meow City signals that this shift is part of a broader evolution rather than an ending.

Just curious…

Laika, a Soviet stray dog from Moscow, became the first living creature to orbit Earth aboard Sputnik 2 on November 3, 1957. Though a pioneer in space exploration, the mission was a one-way trip, and Laika died within hours of launch from overheating and stress, as no reentry technology existed yet.

While her mission provided early data on space radiation and biological responses, it sparked international debate over the ethics of using animals in space exploration.

Later, in 1960, the dogs Belka and Strelka became the first to orbit Earth and successfully return to Earth, paving the way for human spaceflight.
