Cary Town Council Meeting Highlights
Did you miss last night's Cary Town Council meeting? The Cary Town Council approved several safety, infrastructure, and administrative measures during its March 12 meeting while postponing a decision on a major mixed-use development proposal.
🚗 Speed Limits Reduced on Several Cary Roads
Cary Town Council approved lower speed limits on three residential corridors as part of the town’s Vision Zero safety initiative:
Lochmere Drive: 35 → 30 mph
Cozy Oak Avenue: 35 → 25 mph
Green Hope School Road (west of Green Level Church Rd): 35 → 25 mph
Town staff said the changes respond to resident concerns and aim to improve safety for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.
📡 Wireless Carriers to Reimburse Cary $231,771
Cary is renovating the Harrison Avenue elevated water tank, including structural modifications needed to support upgraded wireless equipment from AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon.
The town approved accepting $231,771 in reimbursement from the carriers to cover the cost of catwalk improvements required for the upgraded equipment.
🛣️ Possible Right-of-Way Closures on Two Roads
Council approved resolutions of intent to close unused portions of right-of-way on:
West Chatham Street
Jones Franklin Road
These areas are no longer needed for public use and could allow adjacent developments to improve streetscapes and site layouts.
📅 Public hearings will be held April 30, 2026 before a final decision.
🏛️ Town Clerk’s Office Adding a Full-Time Position
Council approved converting a temporary part-time position into a full-time Assistant Town Clerk.
Officials said growing operational demands require restoring the office to four full-time staff members, the level it had before 2017.
📅 Council Meeting Schedule Updated
Council adopted adjustments to the 2026 meeting schedule, which will be posted on the town’s website as required by state law.
🏗️ Major Alston Commons Development Delayed
Council continued discussion of the proposed Alston Commons rezoning, which would allow:
Up to 625 apartments
200,000 sq ft of office space
55,000 sq ft of retail/commercial space
EV charging stations and mixed-use buildings
5% affordable housing units (for 30 years)
The decision was postponed to a future meeting.

Cary Spotlight Poll Crowns the Rye Chip

In this delightfully divisive "just for fun" poll, readers were asked to banish one snack from the classic Chex Mix lineup forever — and the results were surprisingly close at the top.
The verdict is in, and Chex Mix fans have spoken: the Rye Chip has got to go.
🗳️ The Results:
🥇 Rye Chip — ~31% (the one readers want gone most)
🥈 Mini Breadstick — ~30% (a very close second for the chopping block)
Circle Pretzel — ~17%
Corn Chex — ~13%
Square Pretzel — ~7%
Wheat Chex — ~7%
📌 The takeaway: It came down to a snack civil war between the Rye Chip and the Mini Breadstick — two polarizing pieces that apparently inspire strong opinions. The pretzels and Chex squares, meanwhile, have their fans firmly protected.

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇
A) Blue
Sunsets on Mars appear blue to human observers, contrary to the red sunsets seen on Earth. The fine dust in the thin Martian atmosphere scatters light differently, allowing blue light to penetrate more efficiently near the sun while scattering red light away. While sunsets are blue, the daytime sky on Mars usually appears a butterscotch or reddish-brown color. The blue sunset effect was captured in color by NASA's Curiosity and Perseverance rovers.
