Four Juveniles Injured in Single-Car Crash on US 1 in Cary
Late Friday night, four juveniles were injured in a car crash on southbound U.S. Highway 1 near Tryon Road in Cary. Responding officers found the vehicle had left the roadway and collided with a tree. No other vehicles were involved.
Emergency responders transported all four occupants to the hospital. Police later confirmed that three of the youths sustained serious injuries, though all were in stable condition as of Saturday afternoon.
Investigators have ruled out alcohol as a contributing factor but have not yet determined what led the car to leave the roadway. The Cary Police Department continues to investigate.
The crash prompted a closure of southbound US 1 for several hours, with lanes reopening shortly before 5 a.m. Saturday.

NC State Research Aims to Make Drug Manufacturing Cleaner and Cheaper
A team at North Carolina State University is tackling one of biomanufacturing’s toughest challenges: how to produce life-saving medications like insulin and cancer treatments at scale without wasting significant resources. At the university’s BTEC facility, scientists are refining processes that use living cells to create medicines, aiming to reduce the number of failed large-scale batches that lead to high costs and environmental waste.
Central to their work is a new laser-based sensor system that provides real-time data on microbial activity inside fermentation tanks. This allows researchers to better predict how small-scale processes will perform at industrial volumes, minimizing costly trial-and-error experiments.
The project, supported by BioMADE, highlights the potential of biological production methods as a cleaner alternative to petrochemical-based manufacturing. By increasing efficiency, the team hopes to make medications more affordable while lowering the energy and materials footprint of pharmaceutical production.
The Triangle region, already a national leader in biomanufacturing, stands to benefit significantly from these advances. NC State also plans to use the technology to train students and collaborate with industry partners, bringing the lab’s innovations into commercial use. Read Full Report
