NC State to Face Washington in College Cup Final Monday

NC State’s men’s soccer team earned a historic berth in the College Cup final after a 2-1 win over Saint Louis University. The match, held at First Horizon Stadium in Cary, remained scoreless through the first half before NC State surged ahead with goals by Donavan Phillip and Taig Healy.

70% of Readers Are Very Concerned About Intersection Safety
A recent Cary Spotlight poll reveals that the vast majority of readers are deeply concerned about traffic safety at local intersections. The poll followed a fatal two-car crash at Louis Stephens Drive and Morrisville Parkway, in which a teenage passenger lost their life.
According to the results, 70 percent of respondents said they are "very concerned" about intersection safety, citing frequent close calls and a growing number of crashes. Another 27 percent described themselves as "somewhat concerned," often noting that the level of risk varies depending on the specific location. Only 3 percent of readers reported no concern, generally believing that Cary’s roads are still safe.
No respondents said they were unsure or had not noticed any issues.
Reader feedback highlighted a common theme: frustration with aggressive and distracted driving. One reader wrote, “Drivers take too many chances!” Others pointed to specific behaviors, including excessive speeding, frequent red light violations, and poor understanding of right-of-way laws. Multiple comments criticized the widespread use of phones while driving, even when vehicles are stopped.
Several readers proposed infrastructure changes, including calls for protected-only left turns. One person noted, “Flashing yellow arrows or left on solid green causes too many to take a chance turning left. This would also protect pedestrians.” Another cited a trouble spot at the intersection of Old Apex Road and Cary Parkway, where multiple drivers reportedly run red lights while making left turns.
As Cary continues to grow, readers appear unified in calling for both policy reforms and more cautious driving behavior to improve safety across town.
