Cary Town Manager Put on Paid Leave

Town officials in Cary have confirmed that Town Manager Sean Stegall has been placed on paid administrative leave, but have not revealed the reasons behind the move. Stegall attended Thursday’s council meeting as usual before the council entered a closed session.

The session was held under provisions of North Carolina law that allow for private discussions regarding personnel matters, legal advice, and attorney-client privilege. It remains unclear what prompted the decision, and no public statements have clarified the situation.

As of Friday, Stegall was no longer acting in his role. He has served as Cary’s Town Manager since 2016. Attempts to obtain further information from the town’s leadership have not been successful.

The town’s Chief Strategy Officer declined to comment when contacted, and no timeline has been given for when more details might become available.

Our Community Makes the Holidays Brighter

The 12th Annual Toy and Food Drive organized by Smiling While Sending Hope is underway through December 4, and participating in Cary just got easier.

A reader recently reached out asking for a simpler way to get involved: "I want to participate, but I wish it were easier. I would like to be pointed to a simple link where I can donate money or find directions to a physical location to drop off items." Here's everything you need to know.

Three Easy Ways to Give

Donate Money: Here is the link to make a direct financial contribution. Every dollar helps fund care packages, family events, and year-round support programs.

Shop Online: The organization's Amazon Wish List makes donating as simple as a few clicks—just purchase an item and it ships directly to them. Every item goes straight to care packages for medically fragile children, hospital deliveries to Duke, UNC, and WakeMed, and year-round support programs. Browse and send items at https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/RQJJL44S2YSO.

Drop Off in Cary: Two local businesses are serving as collection sites right here in town. Twisted Scizzors Salon, located near the intersection of Cary Parkway and High House Road at 950 High House Road #950 (phone: 919-303-7775), welcomes donations during their regular hours: Friday 8 a.m.–7 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m.–6 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m.–6 p.m., and Monday through Thursday 8 a.m.–9 p.m. (Thanksgiving hours may differ).

Above and Beyond ABA Therapy at 111 Mackenan Drive (phone: 704-970-0946) is also accepting donations.

What They Need

The organization is collecting new, unwrapped toys, books, crafts, and games suitable for all ages—from babies to young adults. Non-perishable food items are also needed to support local families. Please don't donate perishable items or anything that's been used.

A Mission Born from Love

What started as a 4-H project in 2015 has grown into a thriving nonprofit committed to supporting children and families facing chronic illnesses and special needs. Founder Katie Haynes, who lives with chronic illnesses herself, was inspired to create Smiling While Sending Hope to honor Paxton, a young boy from her church who passed away. That simple toy drive has blossomed into a powerful movement.

"No one should feel alone in their journey," the organization shares. "Living with a chronic illness or special need can feel overwhelming, but at SWSH, we believe in the power of community, kindness, and compassion."

Real Impact, Right Here

The numbers tell the story of a community coming together. In 2023-2024, Smiling While Sending Hope delivered over 500 care packages, collected 3,500+ items through their Christmas Toy & Food Drive, filled an entire moving truck with donations for families, and hosted private events for 50-100 attendees each. Their work has been featured in eight news segments, and their hospital and Ronald McDonald House donations continue bringing smiles to patients across the Triangle.

Where Your Donations Go

Contributions support children and families at WakeMed Children's Hospital, UNC Children's, Duke Children's, SECU House in Chapel Hill, and the Ronald McDonald Houses in Durham and Chapel Hill. The organization works year-round to bring comfort and hope through care packages, family outings, awareness initiatives, and creative projects.

For questions about donating, contact Katie Haynes at [email protected] or visit their Facebook page.

Whether you're donating online, shopping from your couch, or dropping off items during your weekend errands, there's never been an easier time for Cary residents to spread holiday cheer to children who need it most.
