Wake Schools Propose Stricter Rules on Tech and Social Media Use

The Wake County School Board’s policy committee has advanced recommendations to revise student technology use policies, particularly in relation to classroom social media use and digital privacy. Students may soon need explicit permission to access social media during instruction, aiming to reduce distractions while preserving educational flexibility.

The discussion also touched on the unauthorized use of school devices to capture and distribute images or videos of students and staff. Despite growing concerns, including past incidents where altercations were filmed and shared, the committee opted not to restrict personal devices, citing enforcement challenges and potential legitimate use cases like documenting bullying.

While current policies don't ban student recordings, officials acknowledged the need to close existing loopholes without overreaching. The proposed updates aim to balance student rights, privacy, and school safety.

A final decision will come when the full board reviews the recommendations in December.

Just curious…
The Wake County School Board is considering updates to its technology use policies, including restricting social media and clarifying rules around student recordings.

Teens at Risk as Illegal THC Sold as CBD in Apex

Apex police have seized more than 1,150 pounds of illegal THC products that were falsely advertised as legal CBD. The seizure followed a weeks-long investigation sparked by community concerns that underaged individuals were purchasing mislabeled substances from local vape shops.

According to law enforcement, testing revealed that the products in question contained Delta-9 THC levels between 10 and 40 times the legal limit. A single distributor based on Westgate Road in Raleigh was found to be supplying multiple shops with these items. Product testing was conducted at Avazyme, a laboratory in Durham.

Authorities say many consumers may have unknowingly ingested products far more potent than expected, believing they were using standard, legal CBD. While the police emphasized the importance of transparency and legal compliance in the sale of these substances, they did not confirm whether any charges would be filed.

No specific product names or brands have been disclosed, and police have not yet indicated if legal action against the distributor or retailers is forthcoming.
