Explore Lochmere

Lochmere is one of Cary's most beloved master-planned communities, offering over 1,900 homes across nearly two dozen smaller neighborhoods. Built starting in the mid-1980s and 1990s, this community sprawls across mature, tree-lined streets where you'll find three beautiful lakes and around 10 miles of walking and biking trails.

The name Lochmere comes from two Scottish words meaning "lake," and water and green spaces are truly at the heart of what makes this place special. Loch Lomond features a popular 1.1-mile loop trail where neighbors meet for daily walks, while the larger Lochmere Lake offers a boat ramp and dock (electric trolling motors only), and Highlands Lake provides quiet fishing spots.

Keep your eyes open and you'll spot all kinds of wildlife. Geese, great blue herons, ducks, turtles, and fish are everyday sights. A pair of graceful swans calls Loch Lomond home, and you can watch them from the gazebo and swing on the lake's east side. During fall and winter, look up—you might catch a glimpse of bald eagles soaring overhead. Beavers, river otters, and plenty of migrating birds pass through as well, making this a treat for nature lovers.

Beyond the trails and lakes, Lochmere offers three community pools (one with a diving board and water slide), tennis and pickleball courts, sand volleyball, playgrounds, a disc golf course, and even a semi-private golf club. There are picnic spots, open green spaces, and a strong sense of community that brings neighbors together year-round.

Tip: The trails around Loch Lomond are perfect for newcomers wanting to meet neighbors—it's one of the most popular walking spots in the community. For the best wildlife viewing, try early morning or late afternoon around the lakes.
