Seven NC Retailers Fined for Overcharging Customers

Seven retail stores across North Carolina, including a Target in Raleigh, were fined by the state’s Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services for exceeding the 2% overcharge limit in recent price-scanner inspections. These inspections ensure advertised prices match checkout charges.

The Target on Grove Barton Road was fined $735 after inspections in June and July found overcharge rates of 11% and 4.67%, respectively. The store later passed a September inspection. Other fined retailers included a Target in Wilmington, two Circle K locations, Family Dollar, Dollar General, and Rural King, with fines ranging up to $3,420.

The state plans continued monitoring of stores that failed inspections and urges consumers to check receipts closely, especially during the holiday shopping season. Consumers who encounter a pricing error at checkout can report it to the NCDA&CS Standards Division by calling (984) 236-4750.

Just curious…

Have you ever been overcharged at checkout due to a price-scanner error?

Storytelling Festival Returns to Cary

The Town of Cary will temporarily close part of the Symphony Lake Greenway starting October 27 to allow for setup of the North Carolina Chinese Lantern Festival. The closure affects the area surrounding Koka Booth Amphitheatre and is expected to last until January 31, 2026.

To accommodate foot and bike traffic, detour signage will be posted along alternative routes. This seasonal closure has become an annual occurrence tied to the festival's growing popularity.

Running from November 15 to January 11, the Chinese Lantern Festival offers an immersive experience with illuminated lanterns, live performances, and family-friendly attractions. This year marks the event’s tenth anniversary.

Festival and detour details, including a map, can be found on the Koka Booth Amphitheatre website.

Courage Break Records, NCFC Makes History in Playoffs

Cary’s soccer scene delivered plenty of excitement this weekend, with both local teams turning in memorable performances at WakeMed Soccer Park. Fans packed the stands to witness record-setting moments and playoff drama.

Weekend Highlights:

  • North Carolina Courage closed out their season with a 3-2 win over Gotham FC, setting a new club attendance record with 11,170 fans on hand. Despite the win, results elsewhere knocked them out of playoff contention, leaving them in 9th place with a 9-9-8 record.

  • Meredith Speck and Manaka Matsukubo each scored early for the Courage, with Matsukubo’s 35-yard chip stealing the spotlight. A second-half own goal gave the Courage enough cushion to withstand Gotham’s late rally.

  • Kaleigh Kurtz capped off another impressive season, completing her fourth straight Iron Woman campaign, the most in NWSL history.

  • North Carolina FC made history of their own Saturday, winning their first-ever USL Championship playoff game with a 1-0 victory over Loudoun United. Oalex Anderson scored in the 6th minute, while Oliver Semmle kept a clean sheet to move NCFC into the conference semifinals.

Cary fans once again proved they’re some of the best in the game—let’s keep that energy rolling into next weekend!
