Red Cross Cautions Against Complacency as Storm Threat Looms
A potential tropical system in the Caribbean is prompting early warnings from Red Cross officials in Central North Carolina, who are stressing the importance of preparation even before the storm's path is confirmed. With memories still fresh from last year’s Hurricane Helene, which caused over 100 fatalities and widespread destruction in North Carolina, officials are concerned that residents may underestimate this new system’s potential.
The Red Cross has mobilized approximately 120 volunteers in the region, prepared to respond should the situation escalate. Emergency managers warn that many residents develop a sense of invulnerability after surviving several storms, which can lead to dangerous lapses in preparation.
To mitigate risk, residents are advised to gather essential supplies and ensure that they have a plan in place in case an evacuation is ordered. Officials underscore the message: even if a storm appears uncertain now, preparation should not be delayed.
With hurricane season intensifying, local authorities and aid organizations are focused on raising awareness early to avoid a repeat of past tragedies.
Oktoberfest Brings Music, Food, and Family Fun to Cary
The Apex Sunrise and Cary MacGregor Rotary Clubs are bringing back Triangle Oktoberfest for its 11th year, continuing a tradition that blends cultural celebration with community service. The event is held at Koka Booth Amphitheatre and has grown into North Carolina’s largest German festival. Proceeds support both local needs and international causes.
Entertainment will include German brass music, dog races, and a range of family-friendly activities. The children’s area has been expanded this year to feature more games and inflatables. Adults can participate in traditional Oktoberfest contests such as Stein Hoisting and Hammer-Striking, while visitors from Wiesbaden will join Cary’s Sister Cities Association in hosting cultural exchange activities.
Attendees will find a wide selection of beers from Munich breweries as well as seasonal releases from local craft brewers. Food vendors will offer German specialties, fresh brats, and baked goods. Unlimited tasting options are available for those who choose to sample broadly.
Triangle Oktoberfest continues to combine authentic German traditions with a mission of service, offering a festive atmosphere for all ages while raising money for charitable work at home and abroad.

Conway’s Hot Streak Lifts NCFC, Courage Fall Out West
It was a weekend of highs and lows for Cary’s pro soccer teams. While NCFC celebrated a strong home win, the NC Courage were dealt a tough road loss with playoff implications.
Weekend Highlights:
North Carolina FC edged Miami FC 1-0 at home Friday night thanks to a sharp first-half goal from Evan Conway, who now has nine goals this season and has scored in three straight games. The win bumps NCFC up to third place in the Eastern Conference.
Ahmad Al-Qaq set up Conway’s winner with a crisp assist, while Rodrigo Da Costa marked a milestone, making his 200th USL regular season appearance off the bench.
On Sunday, the NC Courage lost 2-1 to Seattle Reign FC, despite a beautiful header by Hannah Betfort in the 57th minute—her second goal of the season.
A tough bounce on an own goal and a late strike from Seattle’s Maddie Dahlien turned the match, leaving the Courage in ninth place—just outside playoff position with four games to go.
No matter the score, Cary fans always bring the energy—see you at the next home match!
