Wake Schools May Ditch "Code Red"
Wake County Public Schools are considering eliminating color-coded emergency alerts in favor of a new, clearer protocol known as the Standard Response Protocol. This approach uses simple language like “Secure” or “Lockdown” to describe actions during specific emergencies, replacing less intuitive terms like "Code Red."
The move is intended to help parents, students, and staff better understand what to do during emergencies. School officials say that the change is part of a broader effort to move away from cryptic or confusing terminology and align with national best practices.
The protocol outlines five response actions, each tied to specific types of emergencies, from nearby police activity to active shooter threats or severe weather.
If approved, the new system would be in place for the 2026–27 school year, offering a more transparent and potentially less stressful way for families to stay informed.
Green Bike Box to Improve Cyclist Safety
Cary is highlighting its newest bike box, located at Walnut Street and Cary Towne Boulevard, just in time for the Lazy Daze festival. The green-painted area at the front of the intersection is designed to give bicyclists a safe and visible space to wait at red lights.
Bike boxes improve traffic flow by allowing cyclists to start ahead of vehicles once the light turns green. This setup reduces conflicts, particularly for riders making left turns, and helps keep intersections more orderly.
Cyclists are encouraged to move into the bike box when signals are red and proceed first when they turn green. Drivers, meanwhile, are required to stop behind the bike box and yield to bicyclists as they move through the intersection.
With more bike facilities appearing around town, Cary is working to make it easier and safer for residents to travel by bicycle, whether for commuting, recreation, or festival visits. Explore more of Cary’s bike facilities

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇
Vitamin A is essential for maintaining healthy vision, particularly in low-light conditions. It plays a key role in the production of rhodopsin, a pigment in the retina that helps the eye detect light. A deficiency in Vitamin A can lead to night blindness and, in severe cases, permanent vision loss. In addition to supporting eyesight, Vitamin A also contributes to immune function and skin health.
