Emergency Officials Share Steps for Hurricane Readiness
Wake County officials are advising residents to prepare for potential severe weather from Tropical Storm Erin by taking key safety measures. The county’s emergency preparedness site, readywake.com, offers sign-ups for emergency alerts and detailed guidance on readiness steps.
Officials recommend starting with an emergency kit stocked with prescription medications, batteries, bottled water, and non-perishable food. They also stress the importance of assessing local flood risks, especially for those living near waterways that could overflow during heavy rain.
Another key step is creating a family plan. This includes identifying more than one evacuation route, knowing where to go during events such as tornadoes or flash floods, and ensuring all household members are familiar with the plan.
By preparing in advance, residents can respond more effectively and safely should the storm’s impact reach Wake County.

United Way and NC Courage Unite to Support Local Nonprofits
The North Carolina Courage have announced a new partnership with United Way of North Carolina (UWNC) designed to broaden both organizations’ reach and impact across the state. The agreement will integrate United Way’s mission into the Courage’s 2025 season through in-stadium signage, matchday events, and digital outreach.
UWNC serves as a statewide hub for 47 local United Way chapters, tackling a range of issues from disaster recovery to economic security. The two organizations have worked together before, notably in 2024 when they raised funds for areas hit by Hurricane Helene in western North Carolina.
During the 2025 season, fans will encounter various opportunities to contribute to the cause, including round-up donations at stadium concessions and merchandise stands. Funds collected will go directly to nonprofits operating across North Carolina.
Additional events, including volunteer opportunities and donation drives, will be announced throughout the year as both organizations seek to strengthen connections between the sport’s supporters and the communities they serve.

Historical Odds of Erin Making Landfall in NC Are Slim
Historical hurricane records dating back to 1850 show that Tropical Storm Erin has just a 6% chance of hitting North Carolina. Of 51 comparable storms that passed near Erin's current location, only three made landfall in the state.
Most storms in that position typically remain offshore or shift toward other parts of the Atlantic. Notable exceptions include two 1955 storms, Hurricane Connie and Tropical Storm Diane, as well as an unnamed 1933 hurricane.
Although this historical data offers perspective, it does not affect the official forecast. Erin is expected to strengthen into a major hurricane and move north of the Caribbean over the weekend. Computer models currently show the storm tracking between Bermuda and the U.S. East Coast, possibly nearing North Carolina by midweek.
Forecasters emphasize that while a direct hit appears unlikely, conditions could change, and residents should continue to monitor updates. Read Full Story

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇
Title IX was passed in 1972 as part of the Education Amendments, prohibiting gender discrimination in any education program or activity receiving federal funding. While it applies broadly, Title IX is best known for expanding opportunities for women and girls in school athletics, ensuring equal access to resources, and addressing issues like sexual harassment on campuses. It remains a cornerstone of gender equality in education.
