Taqueria La Esquina is an authentic Mexican taqueria tucked inside a Shell gas station that serves fresh street-style tacos, breakfast burritos, and traditional Mexican dishes with handmade tortillas and friendly service. What Cary Decided Thursday Night
Did you miss last Thursday night’s Cary Town Council meeting? Here’s what you need to know: Council approved a major rezoning for affordable and multi-family housing on Piney Plains Road, debated a new senior living facility near Harrison Avenue, and adopted a $508 million budget for the upcoming fiscal year—including a property tax increase and higher sanitation fees. With passionate resident input and tough decisions on growth, housing, and spending, this was one of the most impactful meetings of the year.
Here are the highlights and key decisions from the June 26, 2025 Cary Town Council meeting that every Cary resident should know:
1. Piney Plains Multi-Family Rezoning Approved (19-REZ-25)
What it is: A proposal to allow new multi-family housing and 16 Habitat for Humanity townhomes near the Crossroads area.
What residents said: Some praised the affordable housing effort; others raised concerns about traffic, building height, and encroachment into traditional neighborhoods.
Decision: After public comments and discussion, Council approved the rezoning, clearing the way for a mixed-income housing project to move forward.
2. Calyx Senior Living Facility Proposal Discussed
What it is: A new assisted living and memory care facility off Harrison Ave and Reedy Creek Road.
Concerns raised: Residents expressed fears about traffic, impacts to private wells, and loss of tree buffers. Others supported the need for senior housing.
Status: Public hearing held, but no vote yet. The project will go to the Planning & Zoning Board for review and return to Council later.
3. 2026 Town Budget Approved
What’s in it: A $508.3 million budget—a 2.1% increase from last year—that includes:
A property tax increase
Higher sanitation fees
Deferral of 68 capital projects totaling $83 million
Why it matters: Despite difficult decisions, the Council emphasized that Cary will still have the lowest tax rate in Wake County.
4. Other Annexations & Approvals
Highcroft Ridge Townhouses (25-A-01): Annexation approved for 72 townhomes on Wykina Road.
Macedonia-Walnut Street (25-A-05): Annexation approved for a multifamily project (179 units) near Walnut Street.
5. Resident Voices Were Heard
17 written comments and several in-person speakers addressed:
Affordable housing
Infrastructure concerns
Growth pressures
The Council emphasized transparency, civic input, and extended discussion on long-term planning.

Tough Weekend for NCFC, But Courage Star Keeps Rising
It was a tough road trip for NCFC this weekend, while Courage fans are still buzzing about Manaka Matsukubo’s electric first half of the season.
North Carolina FC lost 1-0 to Louisville City FC in Sunday’s USL Jägermeister Cup match after an early strike from Jansen Wilson. The defeat dropped NCFC to fifth place in Group 5 (1-2-0), with head coach John Bradford calling for better finishing and defensive focus.
The match was rescheduled from Saturday to Sunday evening due to weather, but NCFC couldn’t capitalize on their chances despite several promising looks in the final third.
Next up, NCFC visits Charleston Battery on Sunday, July 6 for a big Southern Derby showdown. They’ll try to sweep the season series after a 2-1 win over Charleston earlier this year.
Manaka Matsukubo of the North Carolina Courage didn’t play this weekend, but she remains the talk of the NWSL with 7 goal contributions (4 goals, 3 assists) over her last 5 matches—a run that’s earned her comparisons to league greats and solidified her as one of the top young players in the league.
Even without a full slate of games, Cary’s soccer storylines keep fans locked in!

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇
Functional MRI (fMRI) is considered one of the best tools for viewing real-time brain activity. Unlike standard MRI scans that show brain structure, fMRI measures changes in blood flow to detect which areas of the brain are active during tasks like thinking, feeling, or moving. This non-invasive technique is widely used in neuroscience research and for diagnosing brain disorders.
