Triangle Residents Urged to Prepare

Hurricane season has officially started in North Carolina, and state and local emergency officials are reminding residents to prepare before severe weather arrives. Though Cary and surrounding areas are miles from the coast, the impacts of hurricanes—including flooding, high winds, and power outages—can still be felt across the region.

To prepare, residents should check flood risk maps at fiman.nc.gov, build or update an emergency kit with necessities like nonperishable food, water, medications, and backup power sources, and review their family emergency plan. That includes determining how loved ones will communicate and evacuate if necessary, and how to care for pets during emergencies.

Checking insurance policies to ensure adequate coverage—especially for flood damage—is also advised. And staying informed is critical. Signing up for ReadyWake alerts and monitoring weather updates from the National Weather Service can provide vital lead time during a storm.

Cyclists Fight for Crabtree’s Trails

On Sunday, June 1, a crowd of riders came together at Lake Crabtree County Park to mark the final day of access to its popular mountain biking trails. The beginner-friendly trail system has long served as a hub for Triangle cyclists, offering scenic, accessible paths for new riders and families alike.

The land, leased from RDU Airport by Wake County for a symbolic $1 annually, is now slated for redevelopment into an entertainment district. Though the lease technically remains in effect until the end of June, the trails were closed at the end of the day Sunday.

A portion of the park is expected to remain open, and the county’s proposed 2026 budget includes $239,000 to secure a new lease for that area. Still, for many who have used the park for years, the closure feels like a permanent loss. Advocates are calling for the land to be marked for permanent preservation before development plans move forward. Read Full Story

NCFC Nabs Road Win as Courage Star Shines

It was a weekend of big moments and meaningful milestones for Cary’s soccer stars. Here's your snapshot of what happened — and what’s ahead:

  • North Carolina FC picked up its first USL Jägermeister Cup win, topping the Richmond Kickers 1-0 on Saturday night. Adam Luckhurst scored his first professional goal in the 81st minute, heading in a cross from Patrick Burner, who notched his first assist in an NCFC jersey. Trevor Mulqueen came up clutch with a stoppage-time save to preserve the shutout. NCFC returns to league play next Saturday against Hartford Athletic.

  • Jaedyn Shaw, a rising star for the North Carolina Courage, was recently featured in an AAPI Month spotlight for her role as the first Vietnamese American to play for the U.S. Women’s National Team. In her own words, Shaw spoke about the pride she feels representing both America and Vietnam and how her culture, family, and food — especially her favorite, thit kho — continue to shape her journey on and off the field.

  • Off the pitch, the Courage’s record-breaking spring attendance continues to draw national attention. With average crowds nearing 8,000 and sellouts already logged, Cary’s hometown team is fast becoming one of the hottest tickets in the NWSL.

With meaningful wins and powerful stories, the Triangle’s soccer scene continues to grow — not just on the scoreboard, but in the hearts of its fans.

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇
Believe it or not, certain species of snails can sleep for up to three years! This typically happens during periods of extreme drought or unfavorable conditions, when snails enter a state of dormancy called estivation—similar to hibernation but in response to heat and dryness. During this time, they seal themselves inside their shells with a layer of mucus to retain moisture and wait for the environment to improve.
