Waverly Proposal Draws
Sharp Community Pushback

In a community poll conducted by Cary Spotlight, the proposed rezoning of Waverly Place drew strong opposition from local residents, with 81.4% of voters rejecting the plan to add 750 apartments to the site of Cinebistro.

Of the 70 total respondents, just 3 favored the plan outright, and 6 said they might support it with reduced density. The rest pointed to rising traffic congestion, aging infrastructure, and the risk of altering the community’s character as key reasons for their opposition.

Residents also took aim at what they describe as a pattern of development approvals that do not sufficiently account for long-term infrastructure demands. Concerns included stormwater management, road safety, noise, and access for emergency vehicles. The comments reflect a growing unease that Cary is expanding beyond its capacity to absorb it—without compromising the lifestyle that attracted many residents in the first place.

While most readers acknowledged a need to revitalize Waverly Place, they encouraged the Town Council to pursue solutions that balance new growth with quality of life.

The Cary Town Council is scheduled to vote on the rezoning proposal tonight. Residents are being encouraged to voice their concerns directly to Council members ahead of the decision. The meeting will be streamed live for public access:

Warnings Mount at North Carolina Beaches

Good to know if you are heading to the beach this weekend. North Carolina officials posted swimming advisories at three coastal locations — Whiskey Creek in Wilmington, a section of the Roanoke Sound near Jockey’s Ridge in Nags Head, and a site in Beaufort County — after testing showed bacteria levels above state and federal safety thresholds. These advisories, affecting 200-foot zones near posted signs, are not full beach closures but warn against swimming due to potential health risks.

Simultaneously, beachgoers in Brunswick County and the Outer Banks encountered a different threat: Portuguese man o’ war, whose stinging tentacles can cause pain even after the creatures have washed ashore and died. Beach safety crews are warning visitors not to touch the organisms and to keep an eye out for their balloon-like bodies.

Routine coastal water quality monitoring will continue through October. Residents can view updates online to see when it’s safe to return to affected waters.

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇
Taps is a solemn bugle call traditionally played at U.S. military funerals, memorial services, and flag ceremonies. Its haunting, 24-note melody marks the end of the day and serves as a powerful tribute to those who have served and sacrificed.
