Tobacco Road Marathon Returns to Cary This Sunday

The Tobacco Road Marathon, a highly anticipated race in the Triangle, will take place this Sunday, March 16, along the scenic and flat trails of the American Tobacco Trail. Known as one of the best Boston Marathon–qualifying races in the country, the event has once again sold out, drawing runners eager to set personal records on the fast course.

Beyond being a premier race, the Tobacco Road Marathon has a strong charitable mission. Since its first race in 2010, the event has donated nearly $2 million to local nonprofits, thanks to a fully volunteer-driven effort. Organizers, board members, and student volunteers ensure that race proceeds go directly toward benefiting the community.

While registration is closed, residents can still participate by volunteering or cheering on the runners as they take on the course. Whether as a runner, spectator, or volunteer, the Tobacco Road Marathon continues to be a cornerstone event in Cary, bringing together fitness, community spirit, and philanthropy.

Lenovo Center Gears Up for March Madness as NCAA Tournament Comes to Raleigh

College basketball fever is sweeping through North Carolina as March Madness returns to Raleigh for the first time since 2016. The Lenovo Center will host the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament, bringing in an estimated 57,000 visitors and offering a major economic boost to local businesses, restaurants, and hotels.

The last time Raleigh hosted, the tournament drew 20,000 visitors and generated $4.6 million in economic impact. With demand even higher this year, ticket resale prices have surged, with all-session passes starting at $456—placing Raleigh among the three most expensive first-round host cities alongside Providence and Milwaukee.

Adding to the excitement, two number one seeds are slated to play in Raleigh, and Duke, ranked at the top of the AP Top 25 Poll, could potentially open its tournament run at the Lenovo Center—just 21 miles from home.

Local fans can look forward to even more NCAA action in the coming years, as Raleigh will host the third and fourth rounds of the tournament in 2028 for the first time in its history.

Severe Weather Expected Sunday as Warm Temperatures Return

After a cool Friday, central North Carolina is set to warm up this weekend, with highs reaching the upper 70s on Saturday. The day will be windy, with gusts up to 30 mph, and while morning fog and light sprinkles are possible, conditions will remain mostly dry.

Sunday, however, is shaping up to be an active weather day, prompting a CBS 17 Alert Day between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. A cold front moving through the region will bring strong storms, with the potential for damaging winds, heavy rain, and isolated tornadoes. Flooding could also become a concern, particularly in low-lying areas.

By Monday morning, just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, skies will clear, and temperatures will reach the 60s. The brief cooldown won’t last long, as highs will return to the 70s later in the week, with additional rain chances near the first day of spring.

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Question 👇👇👇

Major General Jeannie Leavitt made history as the first female combat pilot in the U.S. military in 1993 after the ban on women flying combat missions was lifted. She flew the F-15E Strike Eagle and went on to log over 3,000 flight hours, including more than 300 combat hours in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Throughout her distinguished career, she has broken numerous barriers, including becoming the first female commander of the U.S. Air Force Recruiting Service. Leavitt’s leadership and achievements have paved the way for women in military aviation.
