Trout Fishing in NC: Recovery Efforts Bring Optimism for Future Seasons

Trout fishing in Western North Carolina is making a gradual comeback after Hurricane Helene caused significant damage to hatcheries and native trout habitats. While some hatcheries will reopen this summer, others remain closed as recovery efforts continue. The Armstrong State Fish Hatchery in McDowell County lost 600,000 fish, and repairs at the Bobby N. Setzer Hatchery have been delayed until 2026. As a result, trout stocking levels will remain below normal through at least 2027, and anglers can expect limited availability in certain fishing areas.

Despite the challenges, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission has extended trout stocking efforts into December to support local anglers. However, 14 public trout waters remain inaccessible due to storm-related damage. Fishing in delayed-harvest waters will continue under catch-and-release regulations until June 1, after which some areas may transition to standard fishing rules. Anglers planning trips this season should check the N.C. Wildlife Commission’s trout stocking map for updated information on open access points as restoration efforts progress. Read Full Report
