Canned Tuna Recall Expands Over Botulism Risk

A major seafood distributor is recalling several brands of canned tuna sold at some of the country’s largest retailers due to a potential manufacturing defect that could pose a serious health risk.

Tri-Union Seafoods, the company behind popular brands such as Genova and Van Camp’s, has issued a recall affecting products distributed at Costco, Trader Joe’s, Walmart, Kroger, H-E-B, and other grocery chains. The issue stems from a faulty “easy open” pull-tab on the cans, which could compromise the seal, allowing bacteria to contaminate the tuna. Among the potential threats is Clostridium botulinum, the bacterium responsible for botulism, a rare but severe illness that can cause paralysis and, in extreme cases, death.

While no illnesses have been reported, health officials warn that symptoms of botulism may not appear until 12 to 36 hours after exposure. Early signs often resemble common foodborne illnesses—nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea—but the bacterial toxin can also lead to more severe effects, including muscle weakness, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, difficulty speaking, and respiratory failure. Urgent medical attention is required for anyone experiencing such symptoms, as antitoxins can prevent the condition from worsening.

Consumers who purchased the affected products can return them to the store for a full refund. Tri-Union Seafoods is also offering retrieval kits and coupons for customers who prefer to mail back their recalled cans. Each recalled item is identified by specific can codes, UPC numbers, and "Best if Used By" dates, which are listed on the FDA’s website.

As food safety concerns continue to rise, officials stress the importance of checking pantry staples for any recalled products before consumption. Read Full Report

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question👇👇👇

Joseph H. Smith, an African-American inventor, was granted U.S. Patent 581,785 on May 4, 1897, for an improved lawn sprinkler design.
