Snowfall Sets Records in Central NC, Black Ice Remains a Risk

Downtown Cary, NC
A snowstorm swept through central North Carolina earlier this week, leaving varying accumulations across the region. The Raleigh-Durham International Airport recorded a daily snowfall record of 1.5 inches, while Edgecombe County led with 3 inches. Coastal areas saw even higher totals, with Kill Devil Hills reporting 9 inches.

The storm began late Tuesday, intensifying in southern counties before ending by early Wednesday morning. While major highways were clear by midweek, side streets and sidewalks remained treacherous.
With temperatures stuck below freezing until Thursday afternoon, melting has been slow, and black ice is expected to pose risks through Friday. Residents are urged to travel cautiously and prepare for continued cold weather. Read Full Report

Triangle’s Culinary Stars Shine with Six James Beard Semifinalist Nods
The 2025 James Beard Awards have recognized six chefs and restaurants from the Triangle, solidifying the region’s status as a culinary hotspot. Notable names include Scott Crawford, nominated for Outstanding Restaurateur, and Ricky Moore of Saltbox Seafood Joint, competing in the Outstanding Chef category. Moore previously won Best Chef: Southeast in 2022.
First-time semifinalists include Bhavin Chhatwani of Tamasha Modern Indian in North Hills and Figulina, a restaurant known for its blend of Italian and English flavors. The Bar Beej, a Bollywood-themed speakeasy helmed by Chef Preeti Waas, earned a nod for Best New Bar. Waas is no stranger to the James Beard Foundation, having been a semifinalist twice before. Christopher Prieto of Prime Barbecue in Knightdale is also in the running for Best Chef: Southeast, showcasing his mastery of barbecue.
These nominations celebrate both seasoned professionals and innovative newcomers, further cementing the Triangle’s reputation as a premier destination for food enthusiasts.
Rezoning, Annexation, and Land Use: Key Topics at Cary Town Council Meeting
Cary’s Town Council meeting on January 23 will feature discussions on several impactful issues. Rezoning proposals include the Augusta project, which seeks to transform 10.94 acres on Green Level West Road into a low-density residential area with community spaces and road improvements, and the Wellington Park amendment, proposing seven townhouses with enhanced streetscapes.
Town Council Meeting (Regular) 6:30PM-8:30PM (23 Jan 2025)
The Courtyards at White Oak annexation and rezoning request involves 71.66 acres slated for 170 homes, blending detached dwellings and townhouses while maintaining environmental safeguards.
The Council will also consider a Land Development Ordinance change to allow swimming pools, hot tubs, and spas as accessory uses in a specific zoning district and review updates to the Imagine Cary Community Plan, focusing on refining priorities for the town’s growth and development.
In addition to attending in person, here are the Council meeting viewing options:
