Emergency Shelters Brace for Increased Demand as Snow Arrives

As the Triangle faces its first snowstorm in over two years, white flag shelters in Wake County are gearing up to meet rising demand. Organized by St. John’s Metropolitan Community Church, these shelters are nearing capacity but have plans to open additional sites if needed to accommodate those seeking refuge from the bitter cold.

The shelters not only provide beds but also vital cold-weather supplies, which can mean the difference between life and death for those exposed to freezing conditions. To meet the increased need, organizers are calling for community support through donations of essential items, including blankets, hand warmers, and socks.

These efforts ensure that no one is left vulnerable to the harsh winter weather.

Carolina Hurricanes Face Familiar Midseason Challenges

The Carolina Hurricanes have reached the halfway point of their season, holding third place in their division with 50 points. While their record is slightly behind last year’s pace, their position reflects resilience in the face of roster turnover and injuries. The team began the season strong, propelled by an eight-game win streak, but has since struggled to maintain momentum, with a 50-50 split in wins and losses post-Thanksgiving.

Individual slumps from players like Martin Necas, who once led the league in points, have added to the team’s challenges, though signs of improvement are emerging from others, such as Andrei Svechnikov. Injuries to key players, including Shayne Gostisbehere and Frederik Andersen, have tested the Hurricanes’ depth but may soon ease as these players near returns.

Despite these hurdles, the Hurricanes remain firmly in playoff contention. With a history of strong second halves and the potential for trade deadline moves to strengthen the roster, the team is poised to continue its push for a seventh consecutive postseason berth. Fans remain optimistic that the Hurricanes can regain their early-season form and make another playoff run. Read Full Report

NC Universities Gain Millions from Booming Sports Betting Market

North Carolina’s universities are reaping the rewards of the state’s burgeoning sports betting market. Since its launch in March 2024, legal online sports betting has generated nearly $100 million in tax revenue. Thirteen public universities in the UNC System have collectively received $21.6 million in funding through November, with each institution gaining $1.7 million for athletic facility improvements.

These funds are driving significant enhancements, including renovated sports fields, new practice complexes, and upgraded sports medicine facilities. Appalachian State University is among the beneficiaries, with plans underway for a partially funded 85,000-square-foot indoor practice facility.

The fiscal impact of sports betting has exceeded early projections. In the last fiscal year, universities received over $800,000—nearly triple what was anticipated. Projections for the current fiscal year exceed $2 million, highlighting the ongoing potential for athletic programs to benefit from this new revenue stream.

North Carolina’s market has seen rapid growth, with $4.3 billion wagered through November and record monthly bets of $657.7 million in November alone. The market’s success underscores the potential for sports betting to serve as a reliable funding source for public education while reshaping university athletics across the state. Read Full Report
