Cary's Christmas Tree Recycling Options

As the holiday season draws to a close, the Town of Cary is reminding residents of its streamlined garbage and yard waste collection system, along with special accommodations for natural Christmas trees.

Weekly curbside collection, including yard waste, operates on a set schedule. To ensure your tree is disposed of properly, residents are encouraged to remove all decorations, including tinsel, wire, and lights, before placing it at the curb alongside yard waste by 7 a.m. on collection day.

For those seeking a greener farewell to their holiday décor, Wake County’s "Happy Trails Christmas Tree Recycling Program" offers an eco-friendly alternative. From December 26, 2024, to January 26, 2025, residents can drop off undecorated trees at designated locations.

The trees will be transformed into mulch to enhance park trails throughout the county. This annual initiative, which repurposed 4,400 trees into 95 tons of mulch last year, demonstrates the region’s commitment to sustainability and community-driven environmental stewardship.

Whether through curbside collection or trail-building mulch, Cary offers thoughtful solutions for post-holiday cleanup.

As Temperatures Drop, Here’s How to Winterize Your Home

As winter temperatures settle in, North Carolina residents are encouraged to prepare their homes to stay warm and save energy. Lowering the thermostat to 68–70 degrees and changing air filters regularly can improve heating efficiency.

Utilizing natural sunlight during the day and insulating windows at night can help maintain warmth. Energy-conscious homeowners may also consider switching to LED lightbulbs and setting ceiling fans to spin clockwise to push warm air downward.

To protect plumbing, open cabinet doors to expose pipes to indoor warmth and keep faucets dripping slightly. Outdoors, disconnect hoses and insulate exposed pipes with foam covers or pool noodles to prevent freezing.

These simple steps can reduce energy costs and safeguard homes against winter’s chill, ensuring comfort and peace of mind during colder days. Read Full Report

Cary Garden Inspirations: Vibrant Plants and January Tips

As the year begins, adding a touch of red to your garden can create a vibrant focal point.

The JC Raulston Arboretum showcased plants like Red Spider Lily, which offers a unique growing cycle and dazzling late-summer blooms, and Red Feather Celosia, known for its long-lasting flowers that thrive in full sun.

Aztec Lily, a striking Central American perennial, and Red Okra, a dual-purpose edible and ornamental plant, are also excellent options for gardeners looking to make a statement.

This month, consider repurposing your Christmas tree as a bird feeder. Decorate it with suet bars, berry strings, and seed bells to attract wildlife. If snow arrives, protect evergreens by gently removing its weight before it freezes, as the added strain could damage branches.

With these tips, your garden can remain a source of beauty and sustainability all year long. Read Full Report
