Happy and Healthy 2025!

Here are a few of the things I learned in 2024 from a friend in case they are of use in 2025.

  1. Life is precious and precarious. Savor it, and for heaven's sakes enjoy it!

  2. Some people are not your people and will never be your people so stop trying to make them be so. Give your energy to your people.

  3. Community is the most important thing you can build.

Thank you for being a part of our Cary Spotlight community.

With gratitude,

A Healthier Protein Choice Takes the Spotlight

In a significant shift in dietary guidance, a new report from an advisory committee to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) emphasizes beans and legumes as the healthiest protein source.

The 2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee recommends that Americans prioritize beans, peas, and lentils over meat when selecting protein, advocating for an increase in weekly bean consumption from the current 1.5 cups to 2.5 cups.

This recommendation stems from legumes' nutritional profile, which includes high levels of fiber—a nutrient absent in meat—alongside protein, vitamins, and minerals such as folate, calcium, and potassium. Fiber-rich diets have been associated with reduced risks of heart disease, better blood sugar control, and lower cholesterol levels.

Legumes like chickpeas, lentils, and edamame also offer antioxidants that combat cellular damage, further boosting their health benefits. While other protein sources like nuts, seeds, lean meats, and fish remain part of a balanced diet, beans are taking the spotlight for their potential to improve overall health.

For those unfamiliar with incorporating legumes into meals, experts suggest starting with soups, salads, or even smoothies. As the advisory committee reimagines the protein section of MyPlate, the government’s nutrition guide, beans are poised to play a larger role in how Americans approach healthy eating. March 14, 2025: Total lunar eclipse and Blood Moon. A total lunar eclipse will occur March 14, the first of two in 2025 but the only one that will be visible in North America. During a total lunar eclipse, Earth passes between the moon and the sun, and for a time all three are perfectly aligned.
