Wake County ABC Store Reopens Days After Crash

a Wake County ABC store resumed operations Thursday after a car crash temporarily closed its doors. The incident, which occurred last Wednesday, December 18, left Store 22 on East Williams Street in Apex facing significant damage.

Repairs and cleanup efforts began immediately after the crash, with the store's team working diligently to restore the space and prepare it to serve customers once again. By Thursday evening, the location welcomed back the community, marking the end of a brief but challenging downtime.

Cary’s Green Hope Elementary Earns Top 10 Spot in State Rankings

U.S. News & World Report recently unveiled its rankings of North Carolina’s 2,149 elementary schools, recognizing Cary’s Green Hope Elementary as one of the top 10 in the state. The rankings, based on mathematics and reading proficiency and performance, placed two Wake County schools—Green Hope Elementary and White Oak Elementary in Apex—among the highest achievers.

The list also featured schools from across the state, reflecting North Carolina’s educational diversity, with top institutions located in both urban hubs and smaller communities. Schools with incomplete or specialized data, such as those serving specific subgroups or having limited test-taker numbers, were not ranked.

Flooding at Duke University Hospital Disrupts Emergency Operations

On Thursday night, Duke University Hospital experienced flooding after a water pipe burst inside a wall at 11:40 p.m. The incident affected multiple areas, including the Emergency Department, prompting swift action from hospital staff to minimize disruptions to patient care.

Ambulance patients were redirected to nearby hospitals, while those arriving in private vehicles were treated in other parts of the hospital complex. Inpatient areas were not impacted, but some ancillary services were relocated within the facility.

Duke officials encouraged the public to consider alternative emergency care options as repairs and recovery efforts continue. While the hospital aims to resume normal operations promptly, the incident highlighted the resilience and responsiveness of its staff in maintaining critical care under challenging circumstances.
