Cary’s Epic Games Takes the No. 1 Spot on Forbes Dream Employers List
Epic Games, the globally renowned video game company based in Cary, NC, has been named the number one employer in Forbes’ inaugural "America’s Dream Employers" rankings. The list, developed with market research firm Statista, surveyed more than 10,000 college students and 140,000 employees across industries to identify what makes a workplace ideal.
Key factors considered included growth opportunities, salary, workplace flexibility, and employer reputation. Feedback from current employees weighed heavily in the final results. North Carolina had a strong showing overall, with Bank of America, Atrium Health, and UNC Health Care also ranking within the Top 100. Epic Games’ top spot highlights its role as a leader in fostering an innovative and desirable work environment. Read Full Report
Fines Issued Following UNC-NC State Postgame Clash
The Atlantic Coast Conference has fined and publicly reprimanded the football programs of UNC and NC State after a heated postgame clash on Saturday. The incident began when an N.C. State player attempted to plant a Wolfpack flag on the field at Kenan Memorial Stadium following their 35-30 victory, sparking a physical altercation involving multiple players.
The ACC cited the schools for violating the league’s sportsmanship policy, emphasizing that such behavior detracts from the integrity of competition. The fines, described as the maximum allowed under ACC bylaws, will support the conference’s postgraduate scholarship fund. However, the exact amounts were not disclosed.
The rivalry’s intensity added to the emotional nature of the game, but the postgame actions were widely criticized by both universities. This incident mirrors similar clashes at other games nationwide, including Michigan-Ohio State and Florida-Florida State, where heightened emotions during flag-planting celebrations have led to conflict.
The ACC has deemed the matter resolved and will take no further action. Read Full Report
Davis Drive Middle School Remembers Beloved Student Lost in Accident
Tragedy struck Cary’s Davis Drive Middle School over Thanksgiving weekend when eighth-grader Shiya "Chloe" Huia was fatally hit by a garbage truck while using a crosswalk on High House Road. Chloe, known for her academic excellence and vibrant spirit, was celebrated by peers and teachers alike. Her passing has left a lasting void in the school community, which gathered Monday to grieve with the help of counselors.
Police identified the driver as Adrian Holt, 57, alleging that he failed to yield or reduce speed at the crosswalk. Holt has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. The company he works for has expressed condolences to Chloe’s family and is conducting an internal investigation.
In response to the tragedy, the community has rallied around Chloe’s family, raising over $20,000 to support her parents and sister. The incident has highlighted concerns about pedestrian safety in the growing town, as residents reflect on the need for vigilance and responsibility in shared spaces. Read Full Report
