Autism Society of NC: Building Brighter Futures for 54 Years
For more than half a century, the Autism Society of North Carolina (ASNC) has been a cornerstone of hope, empowerment, and advocacy for individuals with autism and their families. Founded in 1970 by a group of determined parents, the nonprofit has grown from its humble beginnings into a statewide network of support with over 800 employees, 11 offices, and a robust annual budget of $31 million. Its mission is as ambitious as it is vital: to provide a lifetime of services and education for autistic individuals and their families.
What sets ASNC apart is its comprehensive approach. Unlike other organizations, ASNC supports individuals across the entire autism spectrum and throughout their lives. “Amazing doesn’t even cover it!” one grateful parent exclaimed, reflecting the sentiment of many families who have found guidance and relief through its programs. Another reviewer shared their deep gratitude: “We are so blessed to have this organization that teaches life skills and nurtures independence for our children.”
ASNC’s reach extends far beyond individual clients. Its advocacy efforts shape policies informed by real-world experience, and its community events, such as the annual Triangle Run/Walk for Autism, bring people together while raising awareness. Camp Royall, a facility near Pittsboro, provides a unique haven for year-round programming and service projects, offering a rare blend of recreation, learning, and support.
“Great leadership and people that care,” wrote one reviewer, encapsulating what has made ASNC a trusted partner for families navigating autism’s complexities. Yet the organization remains future-focused, gearing up for Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month in April and preparing for next year’s Triangle Run/Walk for Autism on October 11, 2025.
As the prevalence of autism grows, so does the need for organizations like ASNC. The words of one reviewer serve as a poignant call to action: “Our society and community need to wake up and do something… Group homes and nursing homes are not the solution!”
For those seeking hope and resources, the Autism Society of North Carolina is more than a charity—it’s a lifeline.
